Effect of Sleep-Deprivation Education on Sleep Practices among University Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Sleep deprivation is an important public health concern among university students in Nigeria because inadequate sleep may affect physical health, mental wellbeing, cognitive functioning, academic performance, concentration, and overall quality of life. University students may experience insufficient sleep because of academic workload, examinations, late-night studying, social activities, employment, excessive use of smartphones and other electronic devices, irregular schedules, and other lifestyle factors. Persistent sleep deprivation may contribute to daytime fatigue, impaired attention, mood disturbances, reduced academic productivity, and other adverse health outcomes. Despite these risks, some students may have limited knowledge of the importance of adequate sleep and the factors that contribute to poor sleep practices. Sleep-deprivation education provides an opportunity to improve students' understanding of healthy sleep requirements, sleep hygiene, the consequences of inadequate sleep, and practical strategies for improving sleep behaviour. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of sleep-deprivation education on sleep practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Theory of Planned Behavior. The Health Belief Model explains how students' perceptions of susceptibility to the health consequences of sleep deprivation, perceived severity, perceived benefits of adequate sleep, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their sleep practices. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes self-efficacy, observational learning, environmental influences, reinforcement, and behavioural skills in developing and maintaining healthy sleep habits. The Theory of Planned Behavior emphasizes students' attitudes toward sleep, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, and intentions as determinants of sleep-related behaviour. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how sleep-deprivation education may influence sleep practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate and postgraduate students aged 18 years and above enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible students. Sleep-deprivation education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to educational sessions, frequency and duration of education, information on recommended sleep duration, consequences of sleep deprivation, sleep hygiene, regular sleep schedules, effects of caffeine and energy drinks on sleep, nighttime smartphone and social-media use, study habits, stress management, bedroom environment, relaxation techniques, and strategies for improving sleep quality. Sleep practices will be assessed using indicators such as average sleep duration, regularity of bedtime and wake-up time, daytime sleeping patterns, nighttime smartphone use, caffeine consumption before bedtime, study-related late nights, sleep environment, relaxation practices, sleep interruptions, weekend sleep patterns, adherence to recommended sleep schedules, and self-reported sleep quality. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized sleep knowledge and practice assessment tools, sleep diaries or recent sleep-pattern assessments where appropriate, and relevant university health programme records. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' characteristics, sleep patterns, sources of sleep information, exposure to education, and sleep practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of sleep-deprivation education on sleep practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, sleep-practice scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that sleep-deprivation education has a significant positive effect on sleep practices among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured and practical sleep education are expected to demonstrate healthier sleep practices than students without comparable exposure. Education may improve students' understanding of the importance of adequate sleep and the consequences of persistent sleep deprivation. It may encourage students to establish more regular sleep schedules, reduce nighttime smartphone and social-media use, limit caffeine and energy-drink consumption close to bedtime, improve sleep environments, and adopt appropriate relaxation and stress-management strategies. Students may also become more aware of the effects of prolonged late-night studying and develop healthier approaches to balancing academic responsibilities with adequate rest. However, heavy academic workload, examination periods, financial pressures, employment responsibilities, social activities, psychological stress, hostel conditions, excessive digital-media use, and limited control over daily schedules may reduce the effectiveness of education alone. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, evidence-based, and sustained sleep-deprivation education, supported by student-friendly university health and academic policies, to contribute significantly to improved sleep practices among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on sleep deprivation, sleep hygiene, sleep practices, student health, mental wellbeing, academic performance, health education, lifestyle health, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, universities, university health centres, student counselling services, healthcare professionals, psychologists, public health practitioners, student organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for promoting healthy sleep among university students. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating sleep-health education into university health programmes, promoting healthy sleep schedules, strengthening student counselling and stress-management services, improving awareness of the effects of nighttime digital-media use, encouraging responsible caffeine and energy-drink consumption, and developing university environments that support adequate sleep and overall student wellbeing across Nigeria.
