Impact of Online Counselling Platforms on Counselling Service Utilization among University Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Online counselling platforms have emerged as an important component of digital mental health services, providing individuals with opportunities to access counselling and psychological support through websites, mobile applications, video consultations, text-based communication, and other digital channels. University students in Nigeria may experience academic pressure, financial difficulties, relationship problems, social adjustment challenges, and psychological distress that can affect their wellbeing and academic functioning. Despite the availability of counselling services in some universities, students may experience barriers such as stigma, concerns about privacy, limited operating hours, geographical distance, inadequate awareness of available services, and reluctance to visit counselling centres physically. Online counselling platforms may reduce some of these barriers by providing flexible, accessible, and potentially more private avenues for obtaining psychological support. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of online counselling platforms on counselling service utilization among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Technology Acceptance Model, Andersen Behavioral Model of Health Services Use, and the Health Belief Model. The Technology Acceptance Model explains how perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, accessibility, and acceptance of online counselling platforms may influence students' willingness to utilize digital counselling services. The Andersen Behavioral Model explains healthcare utilization through predisposing characteristics, enabling resources, and perceived or actual health needs, providing a framework for understanding students' use of counselling services. The Health Belief Model explains how perceived susceptibility to psychological difficulties, perceived severity, perceived benefits of counselling, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence counselling service utilization. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how online counselling platforms may influence counselling service utilization among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, faculties, departments, and eligible students. Online counselling platforms will be measured using indicators such as availability of online counselling services, awareness of platforms, frequency of access, duration of use, text-based counselling, video counselling, telephone counselling, mobile applications, appointment scheduling, accessibility, perceived privacy, confidentiality, ease of use, availability of trained counsellors, response time, referral options, and follow-up services. Counselling service utilization will be assessed using indicators such as number of counselling sessions attended, frequency of service use, initiation of counselling, completion of counselling sessions, repeat utilization, use of individual counselling, participation in group counselling, referral uptake, follow-up attendance, and willingness to continue using counselling services. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, validated counselling utilization instruments, online counselling platform records, university counselling records, and relevant service-use documentation where available. Where a quasi-experimental design is used, counselling service utilization will be assessed before and after implementation or exposure to the online counselling platform. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, awareness and use of online counselling platforms, and counselling utilization patterns. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired or independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of online counselling platforms on counselling service utilization. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that online counselling platforms have a significant positive impact on counselling service utilization among university students in Nigeria. Students with access to convenient, confidential, and user-friendly online counselling platforms are expected to demonstrate increased utilization of counselling services compared with their baseline utilization or students without similar access. Digital counselling may reduce barriers associated with visiting physical counselling centres, provide flexible appointment options, improve access for students who are geographically distant from counselling facilities, and make it easier for students who are concerned about stigma or visibility to seek assistance. Text-based and video counselling may also provide alternative communication options for students with different preferences. However, poor internet connectivity, data costs, concerns about privacy and confidentiality, limited availability of qualified counsellors, inadequate digital infrastructure, technological difficulties, low awareness, and concerns about the quality of online counselling may restrict service utilization. The study therefore expects accessible, confidential, professionally delivered, and technologically reliable online counselling platforms to contribute significantly to improved counselling service utilization among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on online counselling platforms, counselling service utilization, university students, digital mental health, tele-counselling, e-mental health, student mental health, health technology, mental health promotion, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, university administrators, university counselling centres, psychologists, counsellors, information and communication technology departments, digital health providers, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for expanding digital counselling services. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening online counselling infrastructure, improving internet accessibility, protecting confidentiality and personal information, training counsellors in digital service delivery, integrating online platforms with existing university counselling services, establishing effective referral and emergency procedures, and developing sustainable digital counselling programmes across universities in Nigeria.
