Impact of Mental Health Support Groups on Mental Health Support Participation among Young Adults in Nigeria
Abstract
Mental health support groups can provide opportunities for young adults to share experiences, receive emotional and social support, develop coping skills, reduce feelings of isolation, and connect with appropriate mental health resources. Young adults in Nigeria may experience academic, employment, financial, relationship, family, and social pressures that can affect their psychological wellbeing. However, stigma, limited awareness of available support services, concerns about confidentiality, fear of judgment, financial barriers, and inadequate access to mental health resources may discourage young adults from participating in mental health support activities. Mental health support groups provide a structured and potentially accessible avenue for peer interaction, emotional support, psychoeducation, coping skills development, and referral to professional services. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of mental health support groups on mental health support participation among young adults in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Social Support Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and the Health Belief Model. Social Support Theory explains how emotional, informational, instrumental, and companionship support obtained through social networks may influence psychological wellbeing and participation in supportive activities. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the roles of observational learning, self-efficacy, social interaction, behavioural skills, and environmental influences in encouraging participation in mental health support activities. The Health Belief Model explains how young adults' perceptions of mental health needs, perceived benefits of support groups, perceived barriers, stigma, and cues to action may influence their willingness to participate in available mental health support services. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how mental health support groups may influence mental health support participation among young adults in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise young adults aged 18–35 years in selected communities, tertiary institutions, workplaces, youth organizations, and community-based settings across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, local government areas, communities, institutions, organizations, and eligible participants. Mental health support groups will be measured using indicators such as availability of support groups, frequency of group meetings, duration of participation, group accessibility, peer-support activities, psychoeducation, coping-skills sessions, emotional support, group discussions, facilitator involvement, confidentiality arrangements, referral mechanisms, and availability of online or community-based support groups. Mental health support participation will be assessed using indicators such as attendance at support-group meetings, frequency of participation, duration of participation, engagement in group discussions, participation in peer-support activities, use of coping-skills sessions, interaction with facilitators or peers, participation in mental health education activities, utilization of referral services, and continued involvement in available mental health support programmes. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, support-group attendance records where available, and appropriately validated mental health support participation instruments administered before and after implementation of the support-group intervention where a quasi-experimental design is used. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, mental health support-group exposure, and participation patterns. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired or independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of mental health support groups on mental health support participation. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that mental health support groups have a significant positive impact on mental health support participation among young adults in Nigeria. Young adults who have access to structured and supportive mental health groups are expected to demonstrate greater participation in mental health support activities than those without similar access or compared with their baseline participation. Support groups may reduce feelings of isolation, increase awareness of available mental health resources, strengthen social connectedness, improve confidence in seeking support, and provide opportunities for young adults to learn coping strategies from peers with similar experiences. Group discussions, peer support, psychoeducation, facilitator-led activities, and referral information may encourage continued participation in mental health support services. However, stigma, confidentiality concerns, fear of judgment, limited availability of trained facilitators, transportation and financial barriers, competing academic or occupational responsibilities, inadequate mental health infrastructure, and concerns about the quality of peer support may limit participation. The study therefore expects accessible, confidential, culturally appropriate, well-facilitated, and sustained mental health support groups to contribute significantly to improved mental health support participation among young adults in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on mental health support groups, mental health support participation, young adult mental health, peer support, social support, mental health promotion, community mental health, health education, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Youth Development, state ministries of health, universities, workplaces, youth organizations, community-based organizations, mental health professionals, counsellors, psychologists, social workers, public health practitioners, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving young adults' access to mental health support. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for expanding community- and institution-based mental health support groups, strengthening facilitator training, improving confidentiality and referral systems, integrating peer-support programmes into existing youth services, expanding online support options, reducing stigma, and establishing sustainable mental health support initiatives for young adults across Nigeria.
