Impact of Internet Addiction Education on Problematic Internet Use Knowledge among University Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Problematic internet use is an emerging behavioural and public health concern among university students in Nigeria as increasing access to smartphones, social media, online entertainment, gaming, streaming platforms, and other internet-based activities may contribute to excessive and poorly controlled internet use. University students may rely heavily on the internet for academic activities, communication, entertainment, social interaction, and financial transactions, making it difficult to distinguish productive internet use from patterns that may negatively affect daily functioning. Excessive or problematic internet use may be associated with sleep disturbances, reduced academic engagement, impaired concentration, social difficulties, psychological distress, and disruption of daily activities. However, limited knowledge about problematic internet use, its warning signs, risk factors, and potential consequences may delay recognition and appropriate intervention. Internet addiction education provides an opportunity to equip university students with accurate information about problematic internet use, associated risks, warning signs, healthy digital habits, prevention strategies, and available support services. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of internet addiction education on problematic internet use knowledge among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and the Theory of Planned Behavior. The Health Belief Model explains how students' perceptions of their susceptibility to problematic internet use, perceived severity of its consequences, perceived benefits of education, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their acquisition and application of knowledge. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the roles of knowledge, self-efficacy, observational learning, social interaction, and environmental influences in developing healthy internet-use behaviours. The Theory of Planned Behavior explains how attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, and behavioural intentions may influence students' understanding of problematic internet use and their willingness to adopt healthier digital practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how internet addiction education may influence problematic internet use knowledge among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, faculties, departments, and eligible students. Internet addiction education will be measured using indicators such as exposure to structured educational sessions, frequency and duration of education, information about problematic internet use, warning signs, risk factors, psychological effects, academic consequences, sleep-related effects, social consequences, digital wellbeing, healthy internet-use practices, screen-time management, self-regulation, prevention strategies, help-seeking, and available counselling or support services. Problematic internet use knowledge will be assessed using indicators such as the ability to identify problematic internet-use patterns, recognize warning signs, understand risk factors, distinguish healthy internet use from problematic use, identify potential effects on sleep and academic functioning, recognize psychological and social consequences, understand the importance of self-regulation and digital balance, identify appropriate prevention strategies, recognize situations requiring professional support, and identify reliable sources of information and assistance. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, case-based scenarios, and appropriately validated problematic internet use knowledge instruments administered before and after the educational intervention where a quasi-experimental design is used. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, patterns of internet use, exposure to internet addiction education, and knowledge levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired or independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of internet addiction education on problematic internet use knowledge. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that internet addiction education has a significant positive impact on problematic internet use knowledge among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured internet addiction education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of problematic internet use, warning signs, risk factors, psychological and social consequences, academic effects, sleep-related problems, and appropriate prevention and support strategies compared with their baseline knowledge or students without similar educational exposure. Interactive educational approaches involving digital wellbeing discussions, case scenarios, self-monitoring exercises, time-management activities, and practical demonstrations may strengthen students' understanding of healthy internet use and problematic patterns. Improved knowledge may enable students to identify potentially harmful internet-use behaviours earlier and make more informed decisions regarding digital habits and help-seeking. However, widespread internet dependence for academic and social activities, normalization of excessive screen use, social media pressures, online entertainment, limited awareness of digital wellbeing, and inadequate access to counselling services may limit the effectiveness and sustainability of internet addiction education. The study therefore expects accessible, evidence-based, culturally appropriate, and sustained internet addiction education to contribute significantly to improved knowledge of problematic internet use among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on internet addiction education, problematic internet use knowledge, university students, digital wellbeing, behavioural health, technology use, mental health promotion, health education, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, university administrators, student affairs departments, counselling centres, university health services, psychologists, counsellors, public health practitioners, information and communication technology units, student organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for promoting healthy internet use among university students. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating digital wellbeing and problematic internet use education into university health and student development programmes, strengthening counselling and support services, promoting healthy screen-use practices, improving students' digital self-regulation skills, increasing awareness of the potential consequences of excessive internet use, and establishing sustainable digital wellbeing initiatives across universities in Nigeria.
