Impact of Cyberbullying Prevention Programmes on Psychological Wellbeing among Secondary School Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Cyberbullying has become an important concern among secondary school students as increased access to smartphones, social media, messaging applications, online gaming platforms, and other digital technologies has created opportunities for harmful online interactions. Exposure to cyberbullying may negatively affect students' emotional and psychological wellbeing and may be associated with fear, anxiety, sadness, social withdrawal, reduced self-esteem, difficulties concentrating, school avoidance, and other psychological difficulties. Cyberbullying prevention programmes provide an opportunity to educate students about responsible digital behaviour, online safety, recognition of cyberbullying, reporting mechanisms, coping strategies, and appropriate responses to harmful online interactions. Such programmes may also strengthen students' ability to prevent and respond to cyberbullying and promote safer digital environments within schools. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of cyberbullying prevention programmes on psychological wellbeing among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Social Learning Theory, the Social Ecological Model, and the Health Belief Model. Social Learning Theory explains how students' digital behaviours may be influenced by observation, peer modelling, reinforcement, and interactions within their social environment. The Social Ecological Model emphasizes the influence of individual, peer, family, school, community, and broader social factors on cyberbullying experiences and psychological wellbeing. The Health Belief Model explains how students' perceptions of cyberbullying susceptibility, severity, benefits of preventive behaviours, barriers to reporting, and cues to action may influence their responses to online harassment. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how cyberbullying prevention programmes may influence psychological wellbeing among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise students enrolled in selected public and private secondary schools across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, local government areas, communities, schools, classes, and eligible students. Cyberbullying prevention programmes will be measured using indicators such as availability of structured prevention programmes, frequency and duration of programme activities, cyberbullying awareness education, digital citizenship education, online safety training, responsible social media use education, peer-led activities, teacher involvement, parental involvement, reporting mechanisms, counselling support, school policies, and referral procedures. Psychological wellbeing will be assessed using indicators such as emotional wellbeing, positive mood, self-esteem, sense of belonging, social connectedness, psychological resilience, life satisfaction, ability to cope with stress, feelings of safety, and overall perceived wellbeing. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, validated psychological wellbeing instruments, cyberbullying prevention programme records, and relevant school reports where available. Where a quasi-experimental design is used, students' psychological wellbeing will be assessed before and after participation in the cyberbullying prevention programme. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to cyberbullying prevention activities, and levels of psychological wellbeing. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired or independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of cyberbullying prevention programmes on psychological wellbeing. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that cyberbullying prevention programmes have a significant positive impact on psychological wellbeing among secondary school students in Nigeria. Students who participate in structured cyberbullying prevention programmes are expected to demonstrate improved emotional wellbeing, self-esteem, social connectedness, sense of safety, coping ability, and psychological resilience compared with their baseline wellbeing or students without similar programme exposure. Education on responsible online behaviour, recognition of cyberbullying, reporting procedures, coping strategies, and access to counselling may help students respond more effectively to harmful online experiences and reduce the psychological burden associated with cyberbullying. School-wide prevention strategies involving students, teachers, parents, counsellors, and school administrators may further contribute to safer and more supportive digital environments. However, inadequate programme funding, limited teacher training, low parental involvement, underreporting, stigma, rapid changes in digital technologies, and weak school reporting and counselling systems may reduce programme effectiveness. The study therefore expects comprehensive, age-appropriate, school-based, and sustained cyberbullying prevention programmes to contribute significantly to improved psychological wellbeing among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on cyberbullying prevention programmes, psychological wellbeing, secondary school students, digital safety, cyberbullying, adolescent mental health, school health, digital citizenship, mental health promotion, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Universal Basic Education Commission, state ministries of education, secondary schools, school counsellors, psychologists, teachers, parents, child protection organizations, digital safety organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for preventing cyberbullying and protecting students' psychological wellbeing. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening school cyberbullying prevention policies, integrating digital safety education into school curricula, training teachers and counsellors, improving reporting and response systems, increasing parental involvement, strengthening school-based counselling services, and developing sustainable cyberbullying prevention programmes across secondary schools in Nigeria.
