Impact of Academic Pressure Management Programmes on Academic Stress among Undergraduate Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Academic stress is an important concern among undergraduate students in Nigeria and may arise from demanding academic workloads, examinations, assignments, competition for academic achievement, financial pressures, time constraints, fear of failure, and expectations from families and educational institutions. Persistent academic pressure may negatively affect students' emotional wellbeing, concentration, sleep, motivation, academic engagement, and overall quality of life. Academic pressure management programmes provide structured strategies for helping students understand and manage academic demands through time-management education, study-skills training, stress-management techniques, goal setting, academic planning, relaxation activities, problem-solving strategies, peer support, and access to counselling services. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of academic pressure management programmes on academic stress among undergraduate students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping, Social Cognitive Theory, and the Job Demands-Resources Model. The Transactional Model of Stress and Coping explains how students' appraisal of academic demands and their perceived coping resources influence their experience of academic stress. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes self-efficacy, self-regulation, behavioural skills, observational learning, and environmental influences in developing effective strategies for managing academic demands. The Job Demands-Resources Model provides a framework for understanding how demanding academic requirements may contribute to psychological strain, while personal and institutional resources may help students manage these demands. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how academic pressure management programmes may influence academic stress among undergraduate students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, faculties, departments, and eligible students. Academic pressure management programmes will be measured using indicators such as exposure to structured pressure-management sessions, time-management training, study-skills education, examination preparation, academic planning, goal-setting activities, stress-management education, relaxation techniques, problem-solving skills, peer-support activities, counselling services, workload management strategies, and programme frequency and duration. Academic stress will be assessed using indicators such as examination-related stress, assignment and workload pressure, fear of academic failure, difficulty meeting academic deadlines, academic performance concerns, concentration difficulties, sleep disturbance associated with academic demands, emotional exhaustion, perceived academic overload, and overall perceived academic stress. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, validated academic stress instruments, academic pressure management assessment tools, and relevant programme participation records. Academic stress will be assessed before and after participation in the intervention. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to academic pressure management activities, and levels of academic stress. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired sample tests, independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of academic pressure management programmes on academic stress. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that academic pressure management programmes have a significant negative impact on academic stress among undergraduate students in Nigeria. Students who participate in structured academic pressure management programmes are expected to demonstrate lower levels of academic stress, improved time-management skills, better academic planning, greater confidence in managing academic demands, and improved coping abilities compared with their baseline levels or students without similar programme exposure. Time-management training, study-skills development, examination preparation, goal setting, relaxation techniques, and counselling support may help students develop more effective strategies for managing academic workloads and reducing perceptions of academic overload. Peer support and institutional academic support may further strengthen students' coping resources. However, heavy academic workloads, inadequate academic resources, financial difficulties, large class sizes, competitive academic environments, unrealistic expectations, and limited access to student support services may reduce the effectiveness of pressure management programmes. The study therefore expects comprehensive, accessible, and sustained academic pressure management programmes to contribute significantly to reducing academic stress among undergraduate students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on academic pressure management programmes, academic stress, undergraduate students, student wellbeing, stress management, academic coping, university health, counselling services, health education, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Education, National Universities Commission, university administrators, student affairs departments, counselling centres, academic advisers, lecturers, psychologists, public health practitioners, student organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for reducing academic stress in higher education. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating academic pressure management programmes into university orientation and student-support systems, strengthening counselling and academic advisory services, providing time-management and study-skills training, improving examination preparation support, promoting healthy coping strategies, and developing sustainable student wellbeing initiatives across universities in Nigeria.
