Effect of School-Based Dyslexia Screening on Learning Difficulty Detection among Primary School Pupils in Nigeria
Abstract
Learning difficulties are an important educational and child-development concern among primary school pupils in Nigeria, particularly when difficulties in reading, spelling, writing, language processing, or other academic skills are not identified early. Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty primarily associated with persistent challenges in accurate and fluent word reading and spelling, and affected pupils may experience academic difficulties, reduced confidence, frustration, and challenges in classroom participation. However, dyslexia and related learning difficulties may remain undetected because of limited awareness, insufficient school-based assessment services, shortage of trained educational and psychological personnel, large class sizes, stigma, and the misconception that pupils with persistent learning difficulties are simply inattentive or academically weak. School-based dyslexia screening provides an opportunity to identify pupils who demonstrate patterns of difficulty requiring further educational or professional assessment. Early detection may facilitate appropriate educational support, individualized learning strategies, specialist assessment, parental engagement, and timely referral. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of school-based dyslexia screening on learning difficulty detection among primary school pupils in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Response to Intervention (RTI) Framework, the Health Belief Model, and the Social Ecological Model. The Response to Intervention Framework emphasizes early identification of pupils experiencing academic difficulties, systematic assessment of their learning needs, provision of appropriate interventions, and monitoring of their progress. The Health Belief Model explains how parents', teachers', and caregivers' perceptions of learning difficulties, perceived benefits of early screening, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence participation in school-based assessment and referral. The Social Ecological Model emphasizes the influence of pupils, families, teachers, schools, communities, educational systems, and broader socioeconomic factors on learning development and access to support services. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how school-based dyslexia screening may influence learning difficulty detection among primary school pupils in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative cross-sectional analytical or quasi-experimental research design. The study population will comprise primary school pupils aged approximately 5 to 12 years enrolled in selected public and private primary schools across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, local government areas, schools, classes, and eligible pupils. School-based dyslexia screening will be measured using indicators such as availability of screening programmes, screening coverage, frequency of screening, use of age-appropriate and validated literacy assessment tools, assessment of reading accuracy, reading fluency, phonological awareness, spelling, letter-sound recognition, writing-related difficulties, availability of trained teachers or educational assessment personnel, teacher observation, parental involvement, individualized educational support, and referral arrangements. Learning difficulty detection will be assessed using indicators such as identification of persistent reading difficulties, spelling difficulties, writing difficulties, phonological processing difficulties, language-related learning concerns, pupils requiring further educational or psychological assessment, newly identified pupils with learning difficulties, referrals for specialist assessment, and documented learning support needs where appropriately established. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, age-appropriate learning assessment tools, teacher assessment forms, pupil academic records, school counselling or special education records where available, and referral documentation. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize pupils' demographic and educational characteristics, screening coverage, learning indicators, and patterns of learning difficulty detection. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the effect of school-based dyslexia screening on learning difficulty detection. Where appropriate, learning difficulty detection rates before and after implementation of school-based dyslexia screening activities may be compared to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that school-based dyslexia screening has a significant positive effect on learning difficulty detection among primary school pupils in Nigeria. Pupils who participate in systematic school-based screening are expected to have a higher likelihood of previously unrecognized learning difficulties being identified than pupils without access to such assessment. Routine screening may facilitate early recognition of persistent difficulties in reading, spelling, phonological awareness, writing, and other foundational academic skills. Early detection may provide opportunities for targeted literacy interventions, individualized learning strategies, additional classroom support, parental guidance, specialist educational assessment, and referral where necessary. School-based screening may also reduce some barriers associated with seeking assessment outside the school environment and enable teachers to identify pupils who may otherwise be incorrectly perceived as academically weak or inattentive. Increased teacher and parental awareness may further encourage appropriate support for pupils experiencing learning difficulties. Conversely, shortage of trained educational assessment personnel, limited access to validated screening tools, large class sizes, inadequate special education resources, financial constraints, stigma, and weak referral systems may reduce the effectiveness of school-based dyslexia screening. The study therefore expects systematic, age-appropriate, and appropriately implemented school-based dyslexia screening to contribute significantly to improved detection and early educational support for pupils with learning difficulties in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on school-based dyslexia screening, learning difficulty detection, child development, literacy development, inclusive education, special educational needs, school health, educational assessment, and child well-being in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Education, Universal Basic Education Commission, state ministries of education, primary school administrators, teachers, educational psychologists, special education professionals, speech and language specialists, parents, child development practitioners, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving early identification of learning difficulties. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for expanding school-based learning assessments, improving teacher capacity to recognize learning difficulties, increasing access to validated screening tools, strengthening educational referral systems, expanding special education and learning-support services, improving parental awareness, reducing stigma, and integrating early learning-difficulty assessment into appropriate school-based educational and child-development programmes across Nigeria.
