Effect of Mental Health Literacy Education on Help-Seeking Knowledge among Secondary School Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Mental health problems among adolescents are an important public health and educational concern and may affect emotional well-being, academic performance, social relationships, school attendance, and overall development. Secondary school students may experience academic pressure, bullying, family difficulties, peer relationships, social challenges, and other stressors that can contribute to mental health difficulties. Despite these challenges, many students may have limited knowledge of mental health conditions, available support services, and appropriate pathways for seeking professional assistance. Stigma, misconceptions, fear of judgment, concerns about confidentiality, and cultural beliefs may further discourage adolescents from seeking help when they experience emotional or psychological difficulties. Mental health literacy education provides an opportunity to improve students' understanding of mental health, recognition of common mental health problems, available treatment and support options, and appropriate help-seeking pathways. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of mental health literacy education on help-seeking knowledge among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Health Literacy Framework. The Health Belief Model explains how students' perceptions of mental health problems, perceived severity, perceived benefits of seeking assistance, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their understanding of help-seeking. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, self-efficacy, social influence, and environmental factors in the acquisition and application of mental health knowledge. The Health Literacy Framework emphasizes students' ability to access, understand, evaluate, and apply mental health information when identifying concerns and making decisions about appropriate sources of help. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how mental health literacy education may influence help-seeking knowledge among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise students enrolled in selected public and private secondary schools across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, local government areas, schools, classes, and eligible students. Mental health literacy education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to structured educational sessions, frequency and duration of education, knowledge of common mental health conditions, recognition of emotional and behavioural warning signs, understanding of mental health risk and protective factors, treatment and recovery options, mental health stigma, available support services, and appropriate help-seeking pathways. Help-seeking knowledge will be assessed using indicators such as knowledge of when professional help is required, awareness of school counselling services, knowledge of appropriate healthcare professionals, awareness of trusted adults and community support resources, knowledge of referral pathways, understanding of confidentiality, recognition of situations requiring urgent assistance, and ability to distinguish appropriate professional support from potentially harmful or inappropriate sources of advice. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, validated mental health literacy instruments, help-seeking knowledge assessments, school health programme records, and educational programme attendance records. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' characteristics, exposure to mental health literacy education, and help-seeking knowledge scores. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of mental health literacy education on help-seeking knowledge. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, help-seeking knowledge scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared to determine changes associated with the programme. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that mental health literacy education has a significant positive effect on help-seeking knowledge among secondary school students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured and age-appropriate mental health education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of common mental health problems, recognition of warning signs, available sources of support, and appropriate pathways for obtaining professional assistance. Education may help students understand that seeking mental health support is appropriate and that early assistance may prevent difficulties from becoming more severe. Interactive classroom discussions, peer education, practical scenarios, and school-based mental health campaigns may improve students' confidence in identifying appropriate sources of help. Education may also reduce misconceptions and stigma surrounding mental health. However, cultural beliefs, stigma, fear of judgment, concerns about confidentiality, limited access to school counsellors, inadequate mental health services, and parental attitudes may continue to affect students' help-seeking knowledge. The study therefore expects accessible, culturally sensitive, age-appropriate, and regularly reinforced mental health literacy education to contribute significantly to improved help-seeking knowledge among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on mental health literacy education, help-seeking knowledge, adolescent mental health, school health, mental health promotion, health education, counselling, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, state ministries of education and health, secondary school management authorities, school counselling services, mental health professionals, teachers' associations, parent organizations, child-protection agencies, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening adolescent mental health education. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating mental health literacy into school health and life-skills programmes, strengthening school counselling services, improving referral pathways, training teachers in basic mental health awareness, reducing stigma, and developing sustainable school-based mental health education programmes across Nigeria.
