Effect of Community-Based Grief Support on Grief Symptoms among Bereaved Adults in Nigeria

Abstract

Grief following the death of a loved one is a significant emotional and public health concern among adults in Nigeria. Bereaved individuals may experience sadness, emotional distress, loneliness, sleep difficulties, reduced social functioning, difficulty concentrating, loss of interest in usual activities, and other grief-related symptoms. Although grief is a natural response to loss, some individuals may experience persistent or severe symptoms that interfere with daily functioning and overall wellbeing. Community-based grief support provides an accessible approach to supporting bereaved adults through structured support groups, grief education, peer support, counselling, emotional support, coping-skills development, and referral to professional mental health services when necessary. Such interventions may reduce barriers associated with limited access to formal mental health services and provide culturally appropriate support within community settings. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of community-based grief support on grief symptoms among bereaved adults in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Dual Process Model of Coping with Bereavement, Social Support Theory, and the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping. The Dual Process Model explains how bereaved individuals move between loss-oriented and restoration-oriented coping activities as they adjust to life following bereavement. Social Support Theory emphasizes the importance of emotional, informational, and practical support from family members, peers, community groups, and other social networks in coping with loss. The Transactional Model of Stress and Coping explains how individuals' appraisal of bereavement and their perceived coping resources may influence their psychological response to loss. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how community-based grief support may influence grief symptoms among bereaved adults in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The study population will comprise adults who have experienced the death of a close family member or significant person and reside in selected communities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, local government areas, communities, community organizations, faith-based organizations, and eligible bereaved adults. Community-based grief support will be measured using indicators such as participation in structured grief-support sessions, frequency and duration of support activities, grief education, peer-support group participation, emotional support, coping-skills training, counselling sessions, social support activities, problem-solving support, community engagement, referral information, and follow-up services. Grief symptoms will be assessed using indicators such as persistent sadness, yearning for the deceased, emotional distress, loneliness, difficulty accepting the loss, preoccupation with the deceased, sleep disturbance, reduced concentration, loss of interest in activities, social withdrawal, difficulty adjusting to daily life, and overall severity of grief symptoms. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, validated grief assessment instruments, community programme records, and relevant counselling or referral records where available. Grief symptoms will be assessed before and after participation in the community-based grief-support programme. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' demographic and bereavement characteristics, exposure to community-based grief support, and levels of grief symptoms. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired sample tests, independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of community-based grief support on grief symptoms. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that community-based grief support has a significant negative effect on grief symptoms among bereaved adults in Nigeria. Bereaved adults who participate in structured community-based grief-support programmes are expected to demonstrate reduced levels of sadness, loneliness, emotional distress, social withdrawal, sleep difficulties, and difficulties adjusting to life following bereavement compared with their baseline levels or individuals without similar support. Grief education, peer interaction, emotional support, coping-skills training, and access to counselling may help bereaved adults understand their grief experiences, develop adaptive coping strategies, and rebuild supportive social connections. Community-based programmes may also improve access to professional mental health services through appropriate referral pathways for individuals experiencing persistent or severe grief symptoms. However, cultural expectations surrounding bereavement, stigma associated with seeking psychological support, financial difficulties, limited availability of trained counsellors, geographical barriers, and differences in mourning practices may affect participation and programme effectiveness. The study therefore expects accessible, culturally sensitive, community-based, and sustained grief-support programmes to contribute significantly to reducing grief symptoms among bereaved adults in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on community-based grief support, grief symptoms, bereaved adults, bereavement care, psychosocial support, community mental health, grief counselling, social support, mental health promotion, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, state ministries of health, primary healthcare providers, community health workers, psychologists, counsellors, social workers, faith-based organizations, community organizations, non-governmental organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening bereavement support services. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating grief support into community mental health and primary healthcare programmes, establishing community grief-support groups, training community-based support personnel, strengthening referral pathways to professional mental health services, promoting culturally appropriate grief education, and developing sustainable bereavement support programmes across Nigerian communities.
