Effect of Animal-Bite Prevention Education on Animal-Bite Prevention Practices among Children in Nigeria
Abstract
Animal bites are an important public health concern among children because interactions with domestic, stray, and other animals may result in injuries, infections, psychological distress, and potential exposure to rabies. Children may be particularly vulnerable because of their curiosity, limited understanding of animal behaviour, and difficulty recognizing situations that may result in an animal attack. In Nigeria, inadequate awareness of animal-bite prevention, unsafe interaction with animals, poor supervision, and delayed reporting of animal bites may increase the risk of preventable injuries and rabies exposure. Animal-bite prevention education provides an opportunity to teach children how to recognize potentially dangerous animal behaviour, avoid risky interactions, respond appropriately when approached by unfamiliar animals, and report bites or scratches promptly to responsible adults. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of animal-bite prevention education on animal-bite prevention practices among children in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Social Ecological Model. The Health Belief Model explains how children's perceptions of susceptibility to animal bites, perceived severity of injuries and rabies, perceived benefits of preventive behaviours, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their interactions with animals. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, behavioural modelling, self-efficacy, reinforcement, and environmental influences in developing safe animal-interaction behaviours. The Social Ecological Model emphasizes the influence of children, parents, teachers, schools, communities, animal owners, and broader environmental and regulatory factors on animal-bite prevention. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how animal-bite prevention education may influence preventive practices among children in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise school-aged children enrolled in selected primary and secondary schools across Nigeria. Because the participants are children, appropriate parental or guardian consent and child assent will be obtained before participation. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, local government areas, communities, schools, classes, and eligible children. Animal-bite prevention education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to bite-prevention education sessions, frequency and duration of education, knowledge of safe animal interaction, recognition of unfamiliar or aggressive animals, understanding of appropriate behaviour around dogs and other animals, awareness of situations that may provoke animals, knowledge of the importance of adult supervision, understanding of appropriate responses when approached by an unfamiliar animal, knowledge of immediate actions following a bite or scratch, and awareness of the importance of promptly reporting animal bites. Animal-bite prevention practices will be assessed using indicators such as avoiding contact with unfamiliar or stray animals, avoiding disturbing animals while they are feeding or caring for their young, seeking adult permission before approaching unfamiliar animals, maintaining a safe distance from potentially aggressive animals, avoiding teasing or provoking animals, following safety instructions from parents and teachers, promptly reporting animal bites or scratches to an adult, and seeking appropriate medical attention following an animal bite. Data will be collected using age-appropriate structured questionnaires, knowledge assessment instruments, illustrated scenarios, behavioural practice assessment tools, teacher or parent observation where appropriate, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental intervention is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize children's demographic characteristics, exposure to animals, previous exposure to safety education, knowledge of animal-bite risks, and preventive practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of animal-bite prevention education on animal-bite prevention practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, prevention practice scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that animal-bite prevention education has a significant positive effect on animal-bite prevention practices among children in Nigeria. Children exposed to structured, age-appropriate, and practical animal-bite prevention education are expected to demonstrate safer behaviours around animals than children without comparable exposure. Education may improve children's ability to recognize potentially dangerous situations, avoid provoking animals, maintain safe distances, seek adult supervision, and respond appropriately when confronted by unfamiliar animals. Practical demonstrations, role-playing, illustrations, and age-appropriate safety messages may strengthen children's understanding and ability to apply preventive behaviours. Education may also improve children's willingness to report bites or scratches promptly, thereby facilitating timely assessment and appropriate post-exposure care. However, exposure to stray animals, presence of free-roaming dogs, inadequate parental supervision, limited school health education, poor community awareness, and delays in seeking medical care may reduce the effectiveness of education alone. The study therefore expects continuous, age-appropriate, practical, and school- or community-based animal-bite prevention education, supported by parental supervision and effective animal-control and rabies-prevention measures, to contribute significantly to improved animal-bite prevention practices among children in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on animal-bite prevention, rabies prevention, child health, injury prevention, health education, school health, zoonotic disease prevention, community health, environmental health, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, state ministries of health, veterinary and animal-health authorities, primary and secondary schools, parents, teachers, healthcare professionals, veterinarians, community health workers, public health practitioners, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for reducing animal-bite risks among children. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening school-based animal-bite prevention education, increasing parental and teacher awareness, promoting responsible animal ownership, improving community rabies-prevention programmes, strengthening access to appropriate post-exposure care, and developing sustainable child-focused animal-bite prevention interventions across Nigeria.
