Effect of Air Quality Monitoring on Respiratory Health Risk Detection in Urban Communities in Nigeria

Abstract

Poor air quality remains a major environmental and public health concern in urban communities in Nigeria, where rapid urbanization, traffic congestion, industrial activities, open waste burning, construction activities, household energy use, and other sources of air pollution contribute to exposure to harmful pollutants. Continuous or periodic exposure to pollutants such as particulate matter, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, and other airborne contaminants can increase the risk of respiratory health problems, including asthma, chronic respiratory symptoms, bronchitis, respiratory infections, and other pulmonary conditions. Air quality monitoring provides an important mechanism for measuring pollutant concentrations, identifying areas with poor air quality, detecting changes in pollution levels, and generating information that can support timely public health interventions. Effective monitoring can help identify communities and populations exposed to elevated levels of air pollution and facilitate early detection of respiratory health risks. However, inadequate monitoring coverage, limited monitoring equipment, poor maintenance of monitoring systems, insufficient environmental health personnel, and limited dissemination of air quality information may reduce the effectiveness of air quality monitoring in protecting urban populations. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of air quality monitoring on respiratory health risk detection in urban communities in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Environmental Health Theory, Exposure Assessment Theory, and Health Belief Model. Environmental Health Theory emphasizes the relationship between environmental conditions and human health and provides a framework for understanding how air pollution can contribute to respiratory health problems. Exposure Assessment Theory focuses on the identification, measurement, and evaluation of individuals' or populations' exposure to environmental hazards and provides a basis for assessing pollutant concentrations and associated health risks. The Health Belief Model explains how individuals' perceptions of susceptibility, severity, benefits, barriers, and cues to action may influence their responses to environmental health risks and adoption of protective behaviours. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how air quality monitoring may influence the detection of respiratory health risks in urban communities in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative cross-sectional analytical or ecological research design. The study population will comprise residents of selected urban communities in Nigeria, particularly populations living or working in areas with potential exposure to elevated levels of air pollution. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, urban local government areas, communities, households, and eligible residents. Air quality monitoring will be assessed using indicators such as monitoring coverage, frequency of air quality measurements, availability of monitoring stations, measurement of particulate matter and gaseous pollutants, accuracy of monitoring equipment, geographical coverage, availability of real-time or periodic air quality information, and dissemination of monitoring results. Respiratory health risk detection will be assessed using indicators such as identification of respiratory symptoms, detection of individuals at increased respiratory health risk, screening outcomes, reported respiratory conditions, referrals for further assessment, and identification of communities with elevated respiratory health risks. Data will be collected using air quality monitoring records, environmental health reports, structured questionnaires, respiratory health screening tools, healthcare facility records, and relevant government and environmental agency documents. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize air quality conditions, residents' characteristics, and respiratory health risk detection patterns. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the effect of air quality monitoring on respiratory health risk detection. Where appropriate, geographical and environmental data may be analysed to identify patterns between monitored air pollution levels and respiratory health risks. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that effective air quality monitoring has a significant positive effect on respiratory health risk detection in urban communities in Nigeria. Communities with regular and comprehensive air quality monitoring are expected to have improved identification of areas with elevated pollutant concentrations and increased capacity to detect populations at risk of respiratory health problems. Monitoring of particulate matter and gaseous pollutants may provide important information for identifying periods and locations of increased exposure and supporting timely health assessments and preventive interventions. Air quality information may also enable healthcare providers and public health authorities to strengthen respiratory disease surveillance, provide targeted health education, issue appropriate warnings, and encourage vulnerable populations to reduce exposure during periods of poor air quality. Conversely, inadequate monitoring coverage, limited access to reliable monitoring equipment, poor maintenance of monitoring systems, and weak dissemination of air quality information may reduce the ability of health authorities to identify respiratory health risks promptly. The study therefore expects effective air quality monitoring to contribute significantly to early detection and management of respiratory health risks in urban Nigerian communities. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on air quality monitoring, environmental health, respiratory health, air pollution, exposure assessment, disease surveillance, urban health, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Environment, National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, state ministries of health and environment, local government authorities, environmental health professionals, healthcare providers, urban planners, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening air pollution monitoring and respiratory health protection. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for expanding air quality monitoring networks, improving the availability and maintenance of monitoring equipment, strengthening environmental and respiratory health surveillance, improving public access to air quality information, establishing effective health warning systems, increasing community awareness of air pollution risks, and strengthening collaboration between environmental and health authorities to improve the detection and prevention of respiratory health risks in urban communities across Nigeria.
