The Role of Therapeutic Gardens in Healthcare Architecture
Abstract
Therapeutic gardens are increasingly recognized as important components of healthcare architecture because they can provide patients, visitors, and healthcare workers with access to restorative outdoor environments. Unlike conventional landscaping, therapeutic gardens are intentionally designed to support physical comfort, psychological wellbeing, relaxation, and positive social experiences. The integration of vegetation, natural elements, seating, pathways, shade, water features, and sensory planting can create supportive spaces within healthcare settings. Understanding the role of therapeutic gardens is therefore important for developing healthcare environments that address both functional and emotional needs. This study examines the role of therapeutic gardens in healthcare architecture by assessing how garden design and environmental characteristics can influence healthcare users' experiences. The study considers the location, accessibility, size, layout, planting strategy, seating arrangements, shading, visual connections, and relationship between gardens and healthcare spaces. Different types of therapeutic garden environments, including courtyards, healing gardens, roof gardens, and outdoor patient spaces, are considered in relation to their potential contribution to healthcare design. Particular attention is given to the relationship between therapeutic gardens and psychological wellbeing. Exposure to vegetation, natural views, daylight, fresh air, and natural sounds may provide opportunities for relaxation and temporary relief from the stresses associated with healthcare environments. The study examines how gardens can support privacy, quiet reflection, social interaction, and sensory engagement. The arrangement of pathways, planting zones, seating areas, and sheltered spaces is also considered in relation to different user preferences and abilities. Accessibility and usability are important factors in ensuring that therapeutic gardens provide meaningful benefits to healthcare users. The study therefore considers barrier-free pathways, appropriate seating heights, handrails, shade, resting points, safe surfaces, and clear connections between indoor and outdoor spaces. The needs of patients with different mobility levels and those accompanied by visitors or caregivers are also considered. These features can determine whether therapeutic gardens are merely visual amenities or actively usable components of the healthcare environment. Therapeutic gardens can also contribute to the broader environmental performance of healthcare facilities. Vegetation can provide shade, reduce surface temperatures, improve outdoor microclimates, and create more comfortable spaces for users. At the same time, garden design must consider maintenance requirements, water availability, plant selection, security, infection-control considerations, and the specific activities taking place within healthcare facilities. Balancing therapeutic benefits with operational requirements is therefore essential for successful implementation. The study aims to establish the role of therapeutic gardens in healthcare architecture and identify design strategies that can maximize their contribution to user wellbeing and environmental quality. The findings are expected to support the integration of accessible, comfortable, and purposeful garden spaces into healthcare planning and design. The research can contribute to healthcare environments that provide opportunities for relaxation, social interaction, contact with nature, and psychological restoration while supporting the functional and operational requirements of healthcare facilities.
