The Role of Architecture in Supporting Mental Wellbeing in Educational Buildings
Abstract
Educational buildings play an important role in shaping the physical, emotional, and psychological experiences of students and staff. The design of classrooms, libraries, circulation areas, recreational spaces, and outdoor environments can influence stress levels, concentration, social interaction, and general mental wellbeing. Inadequate daylight, poor ventilation, excessive noise, overcrowding, limited privacy, and monotonous environments may contribute to discomfort and psychological stress. Architecture can therefore provide supportive environments that promote positive experiences and contribute to the mental wellbeing of building users. This study examines the role of architecture in supporting mental wellbeing in educational buildings, with emphasis on how spatial and environmental design characteristics influence users' psychological experiences. The research considers factors such as natural lighting, ventilation, acoustics, spatial organization, colour, materials, visual connection to nature, privacy, and opportunities for social interaction. It also examines how the configuration and quality of learning spaces can influence students' concentration, emotional comfort, sense of belonging, and overall experience within educational environments. The study investigates the contribution of biophilic design principles to mental wellbeing in educational settings. Access to natural views, vegetation, courtyards, gardens, outdoor learning spaces, and natural materials can provide opportunities for restoration and connection with the natural environment. Similarly, adequate daylight and natural ventilation can contribute to healthier and more comfortable learning spaces. The careful integration of these elements can create environments that support concentration while reducing environmental conditions that may contribute to stress and fatigue. The research further considers spatial organization and the balance between individual and collective spaces. Educational buildings require a variety of environments that accommodate focused learning, group activities, social interaction, relaxation, and personal retreat. Clear circulation, appropriate wayfinding, accessible facilities, comfortable furniture, and suitable levels of privacy can contribute to users' sense of control and security. Flexible spaces can also allow educational environments to respond to different learning activities and changing psychological and social needs. The findings are expected to provide useful information for architects, educational planners, school administrators, and policymakers seeking to create learning environments that support mental wellbeing. The study may identify architectural strategies that can improve students' and staff members' comfort, concentration, social engagement, and sense of belonging. It also recognizes that mental wellbeing is influenced by social, cultural, institutional, and personal factors, meaning that architectural interventions should complement rather than replace broader educational and psychological support systems. Ultimately, the study aims to establish a clearer understanding of how architectural design can contribute to mental wellbeing in educational buildings. By integrating environmental comfort, biophilic principles, supportive spatial organization, accessibility, privacy, and opportunities for social interaction, the research contributes to the development of healthier and more inclusive learning environments. The findings can encourage a human-centred approach to educational architecture in which mental wellbeing is considered alongside functionality, academic performance, safety, and sustainability.
