The Influence of Workshop Zoning on Safety in University Makerspacesv
Abstract
University makerspaces provide practical environments where students, researchers, and staff engage in fabrication, experimentation, prototyping, and collaborative learning. The presence of machinery, tools, electrical equipment, materials, chemicals, and active work processes makes safety a critical consideration in their architectural planning. Poorly organized workshop spaces can create conflicts between users, obstruct movement, increase exposure to hazards, and complicate emergency response. This study examines the influence of workshop zoning on safety in university makerspaces, focusing on how spatial organization can reduce risks and improve the overall safety of practical learning environments. The study assesses the relationship between workshop zoning and the distribution of different makerspace activities. Areas for woodworking, metalworking, electronics, digital fabrication, assembly, finishing, storage, and general project work often have different operational and environmental requirements. Appropriate zoning can separate activities that generate excessive noise, dust, heat, fumes, or other hazards from cleaner and more sensitive work areas. The arrangement of these zones is examined in relation to user movement, equipment operation, supervision, material handling, and interaction between different activities. Circulation planning is also considered an important component of safe workshop zoning. Clearly defined pedestrian routes can reduce conflicts between users and the movement of materials, equipment, and finished projects. Adequate clearance around machinery and workstations can support safe operation while preventing overcrowding. The positioning of entrances, exits, storage areas, loading points, and workstations is examined to determine how they influence movement efficiency and the likelihood of accidents. Effective visual connections between work areas can further improve supervision and awareness of potentially hazardous activities. Environmental conditions within different workshop zones can also influence safety. Adequate ventilation and localized extraction are important in areas where dust, fumes, heat, or airborne contaminants may be generated. Appropriate lighting can improve visibility during detailed fabrication and equipment operation, while acoustic control can help users remain aware of warnings and communication within noisy environments. Durable floor and wall finishes, suitable electrical distribution, fire-resistant materials, emergency lighting, and clearly visible safety signage are also considered essential components of a safe makerspace environment. The study further considers the relationship between zoning and emergency preparedness. Hazardous equipment and materials should be appropriately separated and positioned to avoid obstructing escape routes or emergency access. Fire extinguishers, first-aid stations, emergency exits, wash facilities, and safety equipment should be strategically located and easily accessible from relevant work zones. Effective zoning can also support staff supervision and enable users to quickly identify safe routes during emergencies. These considerations are particularly important in university makerspaces where users may have different levels of technical experience and safety awareness. The study aims to assess how workshop zoning influences safety performance in university makerspaces and to identify architectural strategies that can support safer practical learning environments. The findings are expected to contribute to the planning and design of makerspaces by highlighting the importance of functional separation, circulation, supervision, environmental control, emergency access, and hazard management. Integrating safety considerations into workshop zoning can help universities provide makerspaces that support innovation and hands-on learning while minimizing operational risks to students, staff, researchers, and visitors.
