The Influence of Spatial Organization on Building User Satisfaction
Abstract
Spatial organization is a fundamental aspect of architectural design because it determines how spaces are arranged, connected, and experienced by building users. The organization of rooms, circulation routes, activity areas, entrances, and supporting spaces can influence convenience, comfort, privacy, accessibility, and the overall usability of a building. Poor spatial organization may result in congestion, confusing circulation, inefficient space utilization, and difficulties in carrying out everyday activities. Understanding its influence on user satisfaction is therefore important for developing buildings that respond effectively to occupant needs. This study examines the influence of spatial organization on building user satisfaction by assessing the relationship between the arrangement of spaces and users’ perceptions of building performance. It focuses on factors such as spatial connectivity, circulation, functional zoning, accessibility, privacy, room arrangement, and proximity between related spaces. The study considers how these characteristics affect users’ ability to move through buildings, access facilities, perform activities, and experience spaces comfortably. Particular attention is given to circulation patterns and spatial relationships. Clear and logical connections between frequently used spaces can reduce unnecessary movement and improve ease of navigation. The location of entrances, corridors, staircases, lifts, waiting areas, and activity spaces is examined in relation to user convenience and accessibility. The study also considers how visual connections, spatial transitions, and legible layouts can influence users’ understanding and perception of building organization. The study further examines the relationship between spatial organization and user comfort, privacy, and interaction. Appropriate separation between public, semi-public, and private areas can support different levels of social engagement and personal privacy. Similarly, well-organized activity areas can reduce conflicts between users and improve the functionality of shared spaces. Flexibility in spatial arrangements is also considered, particularly in buildings where user requirements and patterns of occupancy may change over time. Challenges associated with poor spatial organization may include inadequate space allocation, incompatible activities, poor circulation, limited accessibility, excessive walking distances, and insufficient privacy. Such conditions can negatively affect users’ perceptions of convenience, comfort, and overall satisfaction. Effective spatial planning therefore requires consideration of user needs, functional relationships, behavioural patterns, accessibility, environmental conditions, and the capacity of spaces to accommodate changing requirements. The study aims to assess how spatial organization influences building user satisfaction and identify design characteristics that contribute to positive user experiences. Its findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, planners, and building managers in developing more functional and user-responsive environments. The study can contribute to architectural design approaches that improve spatial clarity, accessibility, comfort, efficiency, and satisfaction among diverse building users.
