The Influence of Entrance Design on Crowd Movement in Event Centres
Abstract
Entrance design is a critical architectural consideration in event centres because entrances serve as major points of arrival, departure, and transition for large numbers of users. During events, poorly designed entrances can create congestion, delays, conflicts between incoming and outgoing crowds, and difficulties during emergency evacuation. The configuration, capacity, visibility, and location of entrances can therefore significantly influence the efficiency and safety of crowd movement. This study examines the influence of entrance design on crowd movement in event centres, with emphasis on how architectural characteristics affect pedestrian flow and user experience. The study assesses key entrance design factors, including the number and size of entrances, doorway configuration, entrance width, spatial hierarchy, location, visibility, and relationship with external circulation areas. Attention is given to how these characteristics affect the movement of visitors during arrival and departure periods. The study also examines the relationship between entrance capacity and expected occupancy levels to determine whether entrance provisions are adequate for different event conditions. Crowd circulation is influenced by the spatial organization between entrances, lobbies, ticketing areas, waiting zones, security checkpoints, and main event spaces. The study evaluates how the arrangement of these components affects pedestrian flow and the formation of queues. Particular attention is given to potential bottlenecks, conflicting movement patterns, changes in direction, and areas where users may be required to stop or slow down. Effective separation and organization of movement routes are considered important for maintaining smooth pedestrian circulation. The study further examines the role of wayfinding, visibility, signage, lighting, and entrance orientation in guiding visitors through event centres. Clearly identifiable entrances and easily understood circulation routes can reduce confusion and improve movement efficiency, particularly for first-time visitors. The study also considers how entrance design affects accessibility for persons with disabilities, older adults, and other users with mobility limitations. Inclusive entrance design is considered essential for ensuring that all visitors can enter and move through the facility safely. Safety and emergency evacuation are additional considerations in assessing entrance design. The study examines the relationship between entrance locations, emergency exits, evacuation routes, crowd density, and assembly areas. Entrances and exits must support normal circulation while also contributing to safe movement during emergencies. Factors such as door operation, unobstructed routes, emergency signage, lighting, and crowd management procedures are considered important for reducing risks associated with overcrowding and uncontrolled movement. The study concludes that entrance design has a significant influence on crowd movement in event centres by affecting pedestrian flow, queue formation, accessibility, orientation, and emergency evacuation. Adequate entrance capacity, appropriate spatial organization, clear wayfinding, effective separation of movement routes, and inclusive design can improve both operational efficiency and occupant safety. The study recommends careful consideration of entrance dimensions, location, visibility, circulation connections, emergency requirements, and anticipated crowd volumes when planning event centres to support safe and efficient movement.
