The Influence of Corridor Width on Student Interaction in Educational Buildings
Abstract
Corridors are essential circulation elements in educational buildings, providing connections between classrooms, offices, laboratories, libraries, and other learning facilities. Beyond their circulation function, corridors can also serve as spaces where students meet, communicate, wait, and engage in informal social activities. The width of a corridor can influence how students move and occupy these spaces, affecting opportunities for interaction without compromising circulation efficiency. Understanding this relationship is therefore important in the planning of educational buildings that support both movement and social engagement. This study examines the influence of corridor width on student interaction in educational buildings. It focuses on how different corridor dimensions affect opportunities for students to stop, gather, communicate, and interact while maintaining effective pedestrian movement. The study considers corridor width alongside factors such as student population, circulation intensity, seating provision, visibility, and proximity to classrooms and other shared facilities. The research examines how wider corridors may provide additional opportunities for informal interaction by creating areas where students can pause without obstructing passing pedestrians. Narrow corridors, in contrast, may encourage continuous movement and limit opportunities for lingering or group interaction. However, excessively wide corridors may also become inefficient uses of building space if they lack appropriate social or functional features. The relationship between corridor width, pedestrian density, and the availability of informal activity areas is therefore considered. Environmental and spatial characteristics are also examined in relation to student interaction. Natural lighting, ventilation, acoustic conditions, visual connection, wall treatment, seating, display areas, and access to adjacent spaces may influence whether students perceive corridors as suitable places for informal engagement. Corridors with adequate width and supportive environmental conditions may function as transitional social spaces, while poorly designed circulation routes may restrict interaction and create congestion. The study further considers how corridor design can contribute to student wellbeing, sense of belonging, peer communication, and informal learning. Educational buildings increasingly require spaces that support activities beyond formal classroom instruction, making the relationship between circulation and social interaction particularly relevant. Appropriate corridor dimensions can help balance efficient movement with opportunities for students to encounter and engage with one another in comfortable and accessible environments. The study aims to assess the relationship between corridor width and student interaction and to identify spatial considerations for designing educational circulation areas that support both movement and social activity. The findings are expected to contribute to improved architectural planning of educational buildings by demonstrating how circulation dimensions can influence social behaviour. The research may assist architects, educational planners, and facility managers in developing corridors that are efficient, comfortable, accessible, and supportive of positive student interaction.
