The Influence of Campus Gathering Spaces on Student Social Interaction
Abstract
Campus gathering spaces play an important role in shaping students’ social experiences and interactions within higher education environments. Spaces such as courtyards, plazas, lawns, shaded seating areas, student lounges, and informal meeting points provide opportunities for students to meet, communicate, relax, and participate in collective activities. The quality, accessibility, and spatial organization of these areas can therefore influence the frequency and nature of social interaction on campus. Understanding this relationship is important for creating educational environments that support both academic and social development. This study examines the influence of campus gathering spaces on student social interaction. It focuses on how the location, size, accessibility, seating arrangements, spatial configuration, and environmental qualities of gathering spaces affect students’ opportunities to interact. Attention is also given to patterns of use, duration of stay, group activities, and the extent to which students perceive these spaces as suitable for informal social engagement. The study considers the role of spatial characteristics such as visibility, enclosure, openness, seating flexibility, pedestrian accessibility, and proximity to academic and residential facilities. Gathering spaces that provide comfortable and easily accessible areas may encourage students to remain longer and engage with others, while poorly located or uncomfortable spaces may discourage social use. The arrangement of seating and the availability of different spatial settings are also examined in relation to individual, small-group, and larger social activities. Environmental conditions are further considered because thermal comfort, natural lighting, shading, landscaping, ventilation, and noise levels can influence students’ willingness to use outdoor and semi-outdoor gathering spaces. The presence of trees, shaded areas, attractive landscape features, and appropriate furniture may enhance the attractiveness of these spaces and encourage repeated use. Conversely, excessive heat, inadequate seating, poor maintenance, or environmental discomfort may reduce opportunities for meaningful social interaction. The study also explores how campus gathering spaces contribute to informal learning, peer communication, community formation, and student wellbeing. Well-designed gathering areas can provide neutral settings where students from different academic and social backgrounds interact beyond formal classroom environments. However, differences in user preferences, privacy needs, cultural practices, and activity patterns may require a variety of gathering spaces rather than a single uniform social environment. The study aims to provide architectural and planning considerations for improving campus gathering spaces as supportive environments for student social interaction. By identifying the spatial and environmental factors that encourage effective social engagement, the research is expected to contribute to campus designs that promote interaction, inclusiveness, comfort, and a stronger sense of community. The findings may assist architects, campus planners, and educational institutions in developing gathering spaces that respond effectively to the social needs of students.
