The Influence of Building Orientation on Indoor Daylight Availability
Abstract
Building orientation is an important architectural factor that influences the amount, distribution, and quality of natural daylight available within interior spaces. The direction in which a building is positioned relative to the sun affects the exposure of its facades and openings to direct and diffuse solar radiation. Appropriate orientation can improve daylight penetration and reduce dependence on artificial lighting, while poorly considered orientation may result in insufficient illumination, excessive glare, and uneven daylight distribution. Understanding this relationship is therefore important for achieving visually comfortable and energy-efficient buildings. This study examines the influence of building orientation on indoor daylight availability, focusing on how different orientations affect the quantity and distribution of natural light within occupied spaces. It considers the relationship between building orientation, facade direction, window placement, room depth, building form, and surrounding site conditions. Attention is given to variations in daylight availability across different rooms and building orientations throughout different periods of the day. The study further investigates how orientation interacts with architectural elements that control daylight penetration. Window-to-wall ratio, glazing type, window height, shading devices, overhangs, fins, balconies, and internal surface reflectance are considered as factors that can enhance or reduce the benefits of favourable building orientation. The relationship between orientation and daylight penetration into spaces with different depths and functions is also examined to determine how building configuration can support more uniform natural illumination. The study considers the relationship between daylight availability and visual comfort. While increased exposure to natural light can improve indoor illumination and reduce artificial lighting requirements, excessive direct sunlight may produce glare, high contrast, and unwanted solar heat gain. The influence of surrounding buildings, vegetation, site topography, urban density, and external obstructions is therefore examined. These factors can significantly modify the amount of daylight reaching building openings regardless of the nominal orientation of the building. Challenges may occur when daylight objectives conflict with thermal comfort and energy performance requirements. Orientations that provide greater daylight exposure may also increase solar heat gain, particularly in warm climates, creating additional cooling requirements. Conversely, reducing window exposure may limit daylight availability and increase dependence on artificial lighting. Achieving an appropriate balance therefore requires coordinated consideration of orientation, glazing, shading, building envelope design, and internal spatial organization. The study aims to provide a clearer understanding of the relationship between building orientation and indoor daylight availability and to identify design approaches for improving natural illumination. It is expected to support strategies that enhance daylight distribution, visual comfort, energy efficiency, and indoor environmental quality while limiting glare and excessive solar heat gain. The findings can assist architects and designers in making informed orientation and facade decisions that promote effective daylighting in contemporary buildings.
