The Influence of Building Geometry on Interior Space Utilization

Abstract

Building geometry is a fundamental aspect of architectural design that influences the organization, proportion, and usability of interior spaces. The shape, form, dimensions, and configuration of a building determine how effectively available floor areas can be arranged to accommodate different activities. Geometrically complex buildings may create distinctive architectural experiences but can also result in irregular spaces and underutilized areas. Understanding the relationship between building geometry and interior space utilization is therefore important for achieving functional and efficient buildings. This study examines the influence of building geometry on interior space utilization by assessing how different building forms affect the arrangement and usability of internal spaces. It considers geometric characteristics such as rectangular, square, circular, irregular, and composite building forms and their relationship with usable floor area. Attention is given to how building geometry influences room proportions, spatial organization, circulation, furniture arrangement, and the allocation of spaces for different activities. The study further explores the relationship between geometric configuration and spatial efficiency. Regular geometries may provide greater flexibility for furniture placement and functional zoning, while irregular forms can generate specialized spaces that respond to particular activities or architectural requirements. The positioning of structural elements, openings, circulation routes, and service areas is also considered because these components can influence the amount of floor space that is practically available for occupation. In addition to functional efficiency, building geometry can influence user experience and spatial perception. The proportion and configuration of interior spaces may affect feelings of spaciousness, privacy, accessibility, orientation, and comfort. Well-coordinated geometric relationships can establish clear spatial hierarchies and improve movement between rooms, while poorly resolved geometries may create awkward corners, inaccessible areas, or spaces that are difficult to furnish and adapt. Several factors can affect the relationship between building geometry and space utilization, including building function, site constraints, structural systems, environmental conditions, circulation requirements, and future flexibility. Public, commercial, residential, and institutional buildings may require different geometric approaches because their spatial demands and occupancy patterns vary. Effective design therefore requires balancing architectural expression with practical considerations of usable area, adaptability, and operational efficiency. The study concludes that building geometry plays an important role in determining how effectively interior spaces are utilized. Appropriate geometric configurations can maximize usable floor area, support efficient circulation, improve spatial organization, and enhance user experience, while poorly considered forms may result in inefficient or difficult-to-use spaces. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects and designers in developing building forms that achieve a balanced relationship between architectural character, spatial efficiency, functionality, and user needs.
