The Influence of Building Entrance Visibility on Perceived Security
Abstract
Building entrances serve as important transition points between public, semi-public, and private spaces and can significantly influence how secure occupants and visitors perceive a building to be. The visibility of entrances from surrounding streets, pathways, parking areas, reception spaces, and internal circulation zones can affect users' ability to observe movement and identify potential security concerns. Poorly positioned, concealed, or visually obstructed entrances may create uncertainty and reduce users' sense of safety. Understanding the relationship between entrance visibility and perceived security is therefore relevant to contemporary architectural design. This study examines the influence of building entrance visibility on perceived security in selected buildings. It focuses on architectural characteristics such as entrance location, sightlines, surrounding landscaping, lighting, building setbacks, boundary elements, glazing, signage, and the relationship between entrances and frequently used circulation routes. The study considers how these features affect the ability of occupants and visitors to see, approach, identify, and monitor building entrances. The research assesses the extent to which visual accessibility at building entrances contributes to users' perceptions of safety and security. Clear sightlines between entrances and surrounding public or semi-public spaces may support natural surveillance and increase awareness of approaching individuals. Conversely, physical obstructions, excessive vegetation, poorly positioned walls, recessed entrances, and inadequate lighting may limit visibility and create areas of uncertainty. The study therefore considers entrance visibility as an architectural factor that interacts with broader principles of crime prevention through environmental design. In addition to physical characteristics, the study considers users' perceptions and experiences of security when approaching and entering buildings. Factors such as visibility of reception areas, presence of other occupants, ease of identifying the main entrance, nighttime illumination, and visual connection with surrounding spaces may influence perceived safety. The study recognizes that perceived security is not determined by visibility alone but emerges from the interaction between spatial configuration, environmental conditions, human activity, and the physical characteristics of the entrance. The effectiveness of entrance visibility may vary according to building type, surrounding land use, operating hours, occupancy levels, and site layout. Public buildings with high visitor turnover may require particularly clear entrances and easily understood approaches, while residential and institutional buildings may require different levels of visual control and privacy. The study also recognizes the need to balance security visibility with other architectural considerations, including privacy, aesthetics, accessibility, environmental comfort, and functional requirements. The study aims to assess the relationship between building entrance visibility and perceived security and to identify architectural strategies that can improve users' sense of safety. The findings are expected to contribute to the development of entrance designs that provide clearer sightlines, stronger natural surveillance, improved wayfinding, and better integration with surrounding spaces. The study may assist architects, planners, and building managers in incorporating visibility considerations into security-conscious design while maintaining functional and welcoming building environments.
