The Influence of Bedroom Ventilation on Occupant Comfort

Abstract

Bedroom ventilation plays an important role in maintaining a comfortable and healthy indoor environment, particularly because occupants spend extended periods in bedrooms during rest and sleep. Inadequate ventilation can lead to heat accumulation, excessive humidity, stale air, unpleasant odours, and increased concentrations of indoor pollutants. These conditions may negatively influence thermal comfort, sleep quality, and overall satisfaction with the bedroom environment. Understanding the relationship between bedroom ventilation and occupant comfort is therefore essential for improving residential building performance. This study examines the influence of bedroom ventilation on occupant comfort, focusing on how the movement and replacement of indoor air affect the environmental conditions experienced by residents. It considers both natural and mechanical ventilation approaches, including operable windows, cross-ventilation, vents, fans, and other ventilation openings. The study also investigates occupants’ perceptions of air freshness, temperature, humidity, air movement, and overall comfort within bedroom spaces. The effectiveness of bedroom ventilation is influenced by several architectural and environmental factors. Window size and position, room orientation, bedroom dimensions, opening configuration, building orientation, surrounding obstructions, and prevailing wind conditions can determine the quantity and direction of air movement. The arrangement of furniture and internal partitions may also influence airflow within the room. Appropriate consideration of these factors can improve air circulation while reducing excessive heat and moisture accumulation. The study further considers the relationship between ventilation conditions and occupant activities, particularly during sleeping and resting periods. Poor ventilation can contribute to overheating, stuffiness, condensation, and discomfort, while excessive air movement may also create undesirable conditions for occupants. Individual preferences, clothing levels, occupancy density, seasonal conditions, and sensitivity to temperature and airflow may influence how residents perceive bedroom ventilation. These factors demonstrate the importance of balancing adequate air exchange with thermal comfort. In many residential buildings, especially in warm climates, bedrooms may experience ventilation challenges resulting from restricted openings, poor building orientation, security concerns, external noise, inadequate maintenance, or dependence on mechanical cooling systems. Such conditions can limit the effectiveness of natural ventilation and increase reliance on energy-consuming mechanical systems. Addressing these challenges requires a combination of appropriate architectural planning, effective ventilation design, suitable window configurations, and consideration of local climatic conditions. The study aims to assess the influence of bedroom ventilation on occupant comfort and identify design strategies that can improve indoor environmental conditions in residential buildings. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, building designers, developers, and homeowners in developing bedrooms that achieve adequate air movement, thermal comfort, and indoor air quality. By integrating effective ventilation principles into residential design, the study can contribute to healthier, more comfortable, and more energy-efficient living environments.
