The Effect of Waiting-Room Seating Orientation on Social Interaction
Abstract
Waiting rooms are common spaces in healthcare facilities, government offices, educational institutions, transportation terminals, and other public buildings where people spend periods of time before receiving services. The arrangement and orientation of seating within these spaces can influence how users perceive one another, communicate, maintain privacy, and engage in informal social interaction. Seating oriented toward or away from other users can create different levels of visual contact and opportunities for conversation. This study examines the effect of waiting-room seating orientation on social interaction and considers how furniture arrangement contributes to the social quality of waiting environments. The study focuses on different seating configurations, including face-to-face, side-by-side, angled, circular, linear, and clustered arrangements. It examines how these configurations influence opportunities for eye contact, conversation, personal interaction, and social avoidance among users. The relationship between seating orientation and the overall dimensions and layout of waiting rooms is also considered. Particular attention is given to how furniture placement affects movement, accessibility, and the availability of personal space within the room. Personal space and privacy are important factors in understanding social interaction within waiting environments. The assessment considers seating distances, orientation, visual exposure, and the degree of separation between individual users or groups. While close and face-to-face arrangements may encourage communication, excessive proximity or direct visual exposure may cause discomfort for users seeking privacy. The study therefore examines the balance between opportunities for social interaction and the need for personal control within shared waiting spaces. The study further considers environmental and spatial factors that may influence the relationship between seating orientation and social behaviour. Lighting, ventilation, acoustics, room proportions, visual connections, circulation routes, and the location of doors and service points are examined. These factors may either support or interrupt interaction between users. The availability of flexible furniture arrangements is also considered because movable seating can allow users to adjust their level of interaction according to personal preference and group needs. Potential challenges include rigid seating arrangements, insufficient circulation space, excessive crowding, poor furniture spacing, inappropriate orientation toward circulation routes, and limited opportunities for users to choose between social and private positions. In some waiting environments, highly exposed seating may discourage interaction, while poorly coordinated group seating may create congestion and discomfort. Understanding these issues can assist designers in developing waiting rooms that accommodate different social behaviours without compromising accessibility or functional efficiency. The study concludes that seating orientation is an important architectural and interior-design factor influencing social interaction in waiting rooms. Appropriate combinations of seating directions, spacing, flexible arrangements, and privacy gradients can provide users with opportunities to engage socially or maintain personal distance according to their needs. The findings are expected to contribute to the design of more comfortable, socially responsive, and adaptable waiting environments across different types of public and institutional buildings.
