The Effect of Spatial Organization on Privacy in Rehabilitation Centres
Abstract
Rehabilitation centres provide specialized environments for individuals undergoing physical, psychological, social, or substance-use recovery and require architectural conditions that support safety, dignity, privacy, and healing. Privacy is particularly important because residents may participate in counselling, medical treatment, therapy, and personal recovery activities that require varying degrees of confidentiality and seclusion. Poor spatial organization can result in unwanted exposure, excessive noise, circulation conflicts, and inadequate separation between private and shared areas. This study examines the effect of spatial organization on privacy in rehabilitation centres, with emphasis on how architectural planning can support secure and dignified recovery environments. The study focuses on the arrangement and relationships between private, semi-private, and communal spaces within rehabilitation facilities. Accommodation areas, counselling rooms, treatment spaces, therapy rooms, dining areas, recreational spaces, staff offices, waiting areas, and circulation zones are assessed in relation to their privacy requirements. Appropriate zoning and spatial hierarchy can help control the degree of interaction between residents, visitors, staff, and service personnel. The study therefore examines how the positioning and adjacency of spaces influence opportunities for visual, acoustic, and physical privacy. Circulation planning is also considered an important factor in maintaining privacy. Corridors, entrances, waiting areas, staircases, and shared spaces should be organized to minimize unnecessary exposure of residents and sensitive activities. Direct views into bedrooms, counselling rooms, treatment spaces, and therapy areas can compromise privacy, while appropriately positioned partitions, transition spaces, screens, and controlled access points can provide greater protection. The relationship between circulation routes and activity areas is therefore examined to determine how spatial organization can regulate movement and interaction. Acoustic and visual conditions further influence privacy within rehabilitation centres. Adequate sound insulation, appropriate room separation, controlled openings, and strategic placement of noisy activities can reduce the transmission of conversations and unwanted sounds. Windows, doors, partitions, landscaping, and interior screening can also control visual exposure while maintaining natural lighting and ventilation. The balance between privacy and access to daylight, outdoor views, social interaction, and therapeutic environments is considered as an important aspect of rehabilitation-centre design. The study also considers the relationship between privacy and the psychological wellbeing of residents. Excessive isolation may negatively affect social interaction and rehabilitation outcomes, while insufficient privacy can create discomfort, anxiety, or feelings of vulnerability. Flexible spaces and graduated levels of privacy can allow residents to choose between personal retreat, small-group interaction, and communal activities according to their needs. Staff supervision and security should also be maintained without creating environments that feel overly institutional or intrusive. The study aims to assess how spatial organization influences privacy in rehabilitation centres and to identify architectural strategies that can provide appropriate levels of visual, acoustic, and personal privacy. The findings are expected to contribute to the planning and design of rehabilitation facilities by emphasizing functional zoning, spatial hierarchy, circulation control, acoustic treatment, visual screening, and flexible privacy gradients. Thoughtful spatial organization can help create rehabilitation environments that balance privacy, safety, social interaction, therapeutic support, and dignity for residents and other users.
