The Effect of Shared Spaces on Interaction in Entrepreneurship Hubs
Abstract
Entrepreneurship hubs provide environments where entrepreneurs, startups, investors, mentors, researchers, and other professionals can interact, exchange knowledge, and develop business ideas. The architectural organization of these environments can influence the frequency and quality of interactions among users. Shared spaces such as lounges, collaborative work areas, meeting zones, cafés, breakout spaces, and informal gathering areas can create opportunities for spontaneous encounters and knowledge exchange. This study examines the effect of shared spaces on interaction in entrepreneurship hubs, with emphasis on how spatial characteristics influence social and professional engagement. The study focuses on the types, locations, sizes, and configurations of shared spaces within entrepreneurship hubs. It examines how communal workspaces, informal meeting areas, social lounges, multipurpose rooms, shared kitchens, terraces, courtyards, and circulation nodes contribute to interaction among users. Attention is given to the relationship between shared spaces and surrounding work areas, as proximity and visibility can influence users' awareness of activities and opportunities for engagement. Spatial configuration is considered an important factor in encouraging or limiting interaction. Open and visually connected spaces may increase opportunities for spontaneous encounters, while appropriately defined semi-private areas can support small-group discussions and focused collaboration. The study examines factors such as seating arrangement, spatial openness, accessibility, visibility, circulation patterns, and furniture flexibility. These characteristics can determine whether shared spaces function primarily as transitional areas or become active settings for meaningful social and professional interaction. The research also considers environmental conditions that affect the use of shared spaces. Lighting, thermal comfort, acoustics, ventilation, furniture quality, and visual character can influence the length of stay and willingness of users to engage with others. Excessive noise, inadequate seating, uncomfortable temperatures, or poor environmental quality may discourage prolonged use of communal areas. The study therefore considers the integration of supportive environmental conditions as part of the design of effective shared spaces. The influence of shared spaces is also related to the diversity of activities accommodated within entrepreneurship hubs. Spaces that support informal conversations, networking, workshops, mentoring sessions, presentations, social events, and collaborative projects may encourage interaction between users with different skills and professional backgrounds. Flexibility is therefore considered important, allowing shared spaces to accommodate changing group sizes and activities. At the same time, the study recognizes the need for private and quiet areas for users who require concentration or confidential discussions. The study aims to assess how shared-space design influences interaction among users of entrepreneurship hubs and to identify architectural characteristics that encourage meaningful social, professional, and collaborative engagement. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, planners, developers, and facility managers in designing entrepreneurship environments that promote networking, knowledge exchange, collaboration, and community formation. The study contributes to a better understanding of shared spaces as important architectural components for supporting interaction and entrepreneurial activity.
