The Effect of Sensory Design on User Comfort in Wellness Centres
Abstract
Wellness centres are increasingly designed as environments that support physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing through spaces for relaxation, therapy, fitness, and personal restoration. The quality of these environments is influenced not only by their functional organization but also by the sensory experiences they provide to users. Elements such as light, sound, colour, texture, smell, temperature, and spatial character can affect comfort, mood, relaxation, and perception of the environment. This study examines the effect of sensory design on user comfort in wellness centres, with emphasis on how architectural environments can be intentionally designed to support positive user experiences. The study focuses on key sensory design elements that contribute to comfort within wellness environments. Natural and artificial lighting, acoustic conditions, material textures, colour schemes, indoor air quality, thermal conditions, and visual connections to nature are considered in relation to user perception. The arrangement and character of spaces such as treatment rooms, relaxation areas, exercise spaces, waiting areas, meditation rooms, and circulation zones are also examined. Understanding the sensory qualities of these spaces can help designers create environments that are calming, comfortable, and appropriate for different wellness activities. Lighting is considered an important component of sensory design because variations in intensity, colour temperature, glare, and daylight availability can influence visual comfort and emotional responses. Similarly, acoustic design can reduce unwanted noise and provide appropriate levels of sound privacy within treatment and relaxation areas. Material selection and surface finishes can contribute to tactile and visual comfort, while carefully controlled colour schemes may reinforce feelings of calmness and relaxation. These elements can be coordinated to create coherent sensory experiences rather than being treated as isolated design features. The study also considers the relationship between sensory design and environmental conditions within wellness centres. Thermal comfort, ventilation, humidity, indoor air quality, and natural elements can influence how users perceive and respond to wellness spaces. Incorporating vegetation, natural materials, daylight, water features, and views of outdoor landscapes may enhance connection with nature and contribute to psychological comfort. However, sensory stimulation needs to be carefully controlled because excessive brightness, noise, strong odours, intense colours, or inappropriate textures may produce discomfort rather than relaxation. User characteristics and the specific functions of wellness spaces may also influence sensory preferences. Different users may respond differently to lighting levels, sound conditions, colours, materials, and spatial enclosure depending on age, activity, personal preference, and sensitivity to environmental stimuli. Spaces designed for active exercise may require different sensory conditions from meditation, massage, or therapeutic areas. Providing opportunities for users to control or adjust selected environmental conditions can therefore improve adaptability and support a wider range of comfort requirements. The study aims to assess how sensory design strategies influence user comfort in wellness centres and to identify architectural approaches capable of creating supportive and restorative environments. The findings are expected to contribute to the development of wellness facilities that integrate functional planning with human-centred sensory considerations. By addressing visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, and thermal experiences in an integrated manner, architectural design can enhance comfort, satisfaction, relaxation, and overall wellbeing within wellness-centre environments.
