Abstract
Production-line arrangement is an important factor influencing worker circulation within manufacturing facilities, particularly where workers frequently move between workstations, equipment, storage areas, and support spaces. The spatial relationship between production stations can determine the distance workers travel, the direction of movement, and the potential for congestion within the workplace. Poorly arranged production lines may result in unnecessary walking, circulation conflicts, reduced productivity, and increased safety risks. Assessing the relationship between production-line arrangement and worker circulation is therefore important for improving factory functionality and workplace performance. This study examines the effect of production-line arrangement on worker circulation, focusing on how different spatial configurations influence movement patterns within manufacturing facilities. The study considers linear, U-shaped, cellular, parallel, and other production-line arrangements in relation to worker access and movement. Attention is given to the location of workstations, equipment, storage points, entrances, and support facilities. The assessment seeks to determine how the arrangement of production activities influences the efficiency, directness, and continuity of worker circulation. The study further investigates the relationship between workstation spacing and worker movement. Adequate circulation widths, clear pathways, appropriate equipment positioning, and logical connections between sequential production activities can reduce unnecessary movement and improve accessibility. The location of tools, raw materials, finished products, and shared equipment is also considered because frequent access to these resources may influence circulation patterns. Effective spatial organization can help workers move between tasks with fewer interruptions while maintaining appropriate separation between production and circulation zones. Safety and workplace comfort are additional considerations in assessing worker circulation. Poorly planned production lines may create narrow passages, blind corners, crossing movements, and conflicts between workers and material-handling equipment. The study therefore considers pedestrian routes, visibility, emergency exits, circulation clearances, and separation between pedestrian and vehicular movement. Environmental conditions such as lighting, ventilation, and thermal comfort are also considered because uncomfortable working conditions may influence movement behaviour and worker performance. Manufacturing facilities may experience difficulties when production-line arrangements are modified without corresponding adjustments to circulation spaces. Changes in production volume, equipment requirements, workforce size, and manufacturing processes can create congestion and inefficient movement patterns. Addressing these challenges requires production-line layouts that can accommodate operational changes while maintaining safe and efficient circulation. Flexible spatial planning can allow workstations and equipment to be reorganized without significantly disrupting established movement routes. The study aims to establish the influence of production-line arrangement on worker circulation and identify spatial strategies that can improve movement efficiency within manufacturing facilities. It is expected to identify key relationships between production-line configuration, workstation positioning, circulation width, accessibility, safety, and worker movement patterns. The findings may provide useful guidance for architects, industrial planners, factory managers, and manufacturers involved in designing or reorganizing production environments. Improved coordination between production-line arrangement and worker circulation can contribute to safer, more accessible, and more efficient manufacturing workplaces.
