The Effect of Poor Site Management on Building Project Performance
Abstract
Poor site management is a significant challenge in building construction because it can affect the effective coordination, productivity, cost, quality, and timely completion of construction projects. Building sites involve the interaction of labour, materials, equipment, contractors, consultants, and other project stakeholders, requiring effective planning and supervision to maintain efficient operations. Inadequate site management can result in disorganized activities, material wastage, equipment downtime, safety problems, delays, and increased project costs. Understanding its effect is therefore important for improving overall building project performance. This study examines the effect of poor site management on the performance of building projects. It focuses on key aspects of site management, including construction planning, labour coordination, material management, equipment utilization, site supervision, communication, documentation, and workflow organization. The study considers how weaknesses in these areas can influence project cost, construction time, quality of work, productivity, and compliance with project requirements. It also examines the relationship between effective site coordination and the achievement of project objectives. Poor site management may contribute to inefficient material handling, inappropriate storage, inadequate resource allocation, and interruptions to construction activities. Poor scheduling and coordination can result in conflicts between different trades and create delays in the execution of interconnected tasks. Inadequate supervision may also allow construction errors, defective workmanship, and deviations from approved drawings or specifications to remain undetected. These conditions can increase rework, waste, project expenditure, and the overall duration of construction. The study further considers the influence of communication and decision-making on site performance. Effective communication between contractors, subcontractors, consultants, suppliers, and site workers is essential for coordinating activities and resolving construction problems promptly. Where communication is weak, instructions may be misunderstood, information may be delayed, and site activities may become poorly coordinated. Similarly, inadequate record keeping, reporting, and monitoring can make it difficult to identify emerging problems and implement corrective measures before they significantly affect project performance. Poor site management can be intensified by factors such as inadequate managerial skills, shortage of experienced personnel, poor working conditions, insufficient equipment, unreliable material supply, financial constraints, and weak monitoring systems. These challenges may vary according to project size, construction method, organizational structure, and local construction conditions. Addressing them requires improved site planning, competent supervision, effective resource management, regular progress monitoring, clear communication, and appropriate use of construction management techniques. The study aims to assess how poor site management affects building project performance and to identify management practices that can improve construction outcomes. It is expected to contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between site organization and project success, particularly in relation to cost, time, quality, productivity, and resource efficiency. The findings can provide useful guidance for architects, builders, project managers, contractors, consultants, and other construction stakeholders seeking to improve site operations and achieve more efficient building project delivery.
