The Effect of Patient Room Orientation on Environmental Comfort
Abstract
Patient room orientation is an important consideration in healthcare architecture because the positioning of rooms within a building can influence environmental conditions experienced by patients. Factors such as solar exposure, daylight availability, natural ventilation, outdoor views, and heat gain are partly determined by the orientation of rooms and their openings. Since patients may spend extended periods within their rooms, achieving appropriate environmental comfort is essential for supporting recovery, rest, and overall wellbeing. Effective orientation can therefore contribute to the development of healthier and more comfortable healthcare environments. This study examines the effect of patient room orientation on environmental comfort, focusing on the relationship between room positioning and indoor thermal, visual, and ventilation conditions. It considers the orientation of patient rooms in relation to solar paths, prevailing wind directions, surrounding buildings, vegetation, and external environmental conditions. The study also evaluates how different orientations may affect patients' exposure to daylight, heat, glare, natural airflow, and outdoor views within healthcare facilities. Solar orientation can have a significant influence on indoor thermal conditions within patient rooms. Rooms with excessive exposure to direct solar radiation may experience increased heat gain and elevated indoor temperatures, particularly in warm climates. Appropriate orientation, combined with external shading, suitable glazing, and effective building envelope strategies, can help control solar exposure. Conversely, access to desirable daylight can reduce dependence on artificial lighting while supporting visual comfort and contributing to a more pleasant patient environment. Room orientation can also affect natural ventilation and visual connection with the outdoor environment. Positioning openings according to prevailing wind directions may improve opportunities for cross-ventilation and natural air movement where climatic and operational conditions permit. Access to outdoor views, vegetation, courtyards, or landscaped areas can provide visual relief and contribute to patients' perception of comfort. However, these benefits must be balanced with requirements for privacy, noise control, infection prevention, and the functional organization of healthcare spaces. The study further considers the challenges associated with achieving optimal patient room orientation within healthcare facilities. Site constraints, building geometry, land availability, surrounding structures, functional zoning, circulation requirements, and future expansion can limit orientation choices. In addition, environmental conditions may vary between different climatic regions, meaning that orientation strategies suitable for one location may not produce the same results elsewhere. A comprehensive approach that combines orientation with shading, window design, insulation, ventilation, landscape planning, and environmental control is therefore necessary. The study aims to provide an understanding of how patient room orientation can contribute to improved environmental comfort in healthcare facilities. The findings are expected to assist architects, healthcare planners, building designers, and facility managers in making informed decisions about room positioning during the early stages of design. By integrating solar exposure, daylight, ventilation, outdoor views, privacy, and climatic conditions into orientation decisions, healthcare facilities can provide more comfortable and supportive environments that contribute to improved patient experience and wellbeing.
