The Effect of Interior Layout on Learning Activities in University Libraries
Abstract
University libraries are important learning environments that support individual study, group collaboration, research, reading, and access to academic resources. The interior layout of a library can influence how effectively students use these spaces and how comfortably they engage in different learning activities. Poorly organized layouts may create circulation conflicts, excessive noise, inadequate privacy, and difficulties in accessing resources. This study examines the effect of interior layout on learning activities in university libraries, with emphasis on spatial organization, furniture arrangement, circulation, and the provision of diverse learning environments. The study assesses the spatial characteristics of selected university libraries by examining the arrangement and relationship between reading areas, individual study spaces, group-study zones, book stacks, computer areas, service desks, circulation routes, and support facilities. Factors such as space allocation, furniture positioning, seating capacity, workstation arrangement, and distance between functional areas are considered. The research evaluates how these elements influence students' ability to access facilities and move efficiently through the library. Particular attention is given to the relationship between different spatial configurations and learning activities. Quiet individual study areas require different environmental conditions from collaborative spaces where discussion and group interaction are encouraged. The study examines how zoning, spatial separation, furniture arrangement, and acoustic conditions can support different patterns of learning. The relationship between study-space flexibility and students' ability to select environments appropriate to their academic tasks is also considered. The research further investigates the influence of interior layout on concentration, interaction, comfort, and user satisfaction. Factors such as visual connectivity, privacy, natural lighting, artificial lighting, ventilation, noise control, and ergonomic furniture can influence students' experiences within library spaces. The study considers how these environmental qualities interact with spatial organization to create supportive learning environments. The accessibility of facilities for students with different physical abilities is also assessed. Flexibility and adaptability are additional considerations because university learning patterns and library functions continue to change with technological development and evolving educational practices. The study examines the capacity of library interiors to accommodate individual study, collaborative learning, digital research, informal interaction, and changing furniture arrangements. The provision of power outlets, computer facilities, flexible furniture, technology-enabled spaces, and appropriately distributed support facilities is considered in relation to contemporary student needs. The study aims to assess the effect of interior layout on learning activities in university libraries and identify spatial strategies that can improve functionality, comfort, accessibility, and student engagement. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, interior designers, university administrators, and facility managers in planning and upgrading library environments. Effective zoning, flexible furniture arrangements, appropriate circulation, acoustic control, and diverse study spaces can contribute to more supportive and adaptable university library environments.
