The Effect of Corridor Width on Pedestrian Interaction in Institutional Buildings
Abstract
Corridors are fundamental circulation spaces in institutional buildings, connecting offices, classrooms, service areas, public facilities, and other functional spaces. Although primarily designed to facilitate movement, corridors can also provide opportunities for pedestrians to pause, communicate, and interact with one another. The width of a corridor can influence pedestrian density, movement speed, personal space, and opportunities for informal encounters. Understanding this relationship is therefore important for designing institutional buildings that support efficient circulation while accommodating positive social interaction. This study examines the effect of corridor width on pedestrian interaction in institutional buildings. It focuses on how variations in corridor dimensions influence pedestrian movement, stopping behaviour, encounters, and informal communication. The study considers corridors serving different functions and levels of pedestrian activity, with attention to the relationship between corridor width, occupancy levels, circulation intensity, and patterns of interaction. The study examines spatial factors including corridor width, length, intersection points, entrances, seating opportunities, visibility, and connections to adjacent spaces. Wider corridors may provide greater opportunities for pedestrians to slow down or stop without obstructing circulation, potentially encouraging interaction. Narrow corridors, however, may prioritize continuous movement and limit opportunities for stationary activities, particularly where pedestrian traffic is high. The relationship between available circulation space and pedestrian behaviour is therefore considered. Environmental and architectural conditions are also examined in relation to pedestrian interaction. Natural lighting, ventilation, acoustics, visual connectivity, surface finishes, seating, signage, and the location of doors can influence how users experience and occupy corridors. Appropriate environmental conditions may encourage users to remain within circulation spaces for short periods, while excessive noise, heat, congestion, or poor visibility may discourage interaction and reduce comfort. The study further considers the balance between social interaction and circulation efficiency. Excessively wide corridors may require additional building area and potentially increase construction and maintenance requirements, while insufficient widths may result in congestion, reduced accessibility, and conflicts between moving and stationary users. Effective corridor planning therefore requires consideration of pedestrian volume, institutional function, accessibility requirements, emergency movement, and opportunities for informal social engagement. The study aims to establish how corridor width influences pedestrian interaction and to identify spatial considerations for improving circulation areas within institutional buildings. The findings are expected to contribute to architectural planning approaches that balance movement efficiency, accessibility, personal space, and social interaction. The research may assist architects, institutional planners, and facility managers in designing corridors that function effectively as both circulation routes and supportive spaces for incidental human interaction.
