The Effect of Building Layout on Functional Accessibility
Abstract
Building layout is a fundamental aspect of architectural design that influences how easily users can access and move between different spaces within a building. A well-organized layout can provide clear circulation routes, logical connections between functional areas, and convenient access to essential facilities. Conversely, poorly planned layouts may create unnecessary movement, barriers, confusing circulation, and unequal access to building spaces. Understanding the effect of building layout on functional accessibility is therefore important for creating buildings that are efficient, inclusive, and responsive to diverse user needs. This study examines the effect of building layout on functional accessibility by assessing the relationship between spatial arrangement and users’ ability to reach and use different building functions. It focuses on entrances, corridors, staircases, lifts, ramps, rooms, service areas, and other circulation elements. The study considers how the positioning, connectivity, and hierarchy of these spaces influence ease of movement and access for different categories of building users. Particular attention is given to circulation patterns and spatial connectivity. Direct and clearly defined routes can reduce unnecessary travel distances and improve orientation, while appropriate relationships between major functional spaces can enhance convenience. The study examines how entrance locations, corridor configurations, vertical circulation, transition spaces, and access points affect movement between different parts of a building. Wayfinding and visual connections are also considered as factors that can support functional accessibility. The study further considers accessibility for users with different physical abilities and mobility requirements. Adequate circulation widths, level changes, ramps, lifts, accessible entrances, and appropriately located facilities can reduce physical barriers within buildings. The relationship between universal design principles and building layout is therefore examined, with emphasis on creating spaces that can be accessed and used comfortably by a diverse range of occupants and visitors. Challenges such as narrow circulation routes, excessive travel distances, poorly positioned entrances, inadequate vertical circulation, level differences, and limited spatial connectivity can negatively affect functional accessibility. These problems may reduce the usability of buildings and create difficulties for elderly persons, persons with disabilities, visitors, and other users with specific mobility needs. Effective building layout therefore requires consideration of accessibility standards, user behaviour, functional relationships, circulation efficiency, and future adaptability. The study aims to assess how building layout influences functional accessibility and identify spatial characteristics that support convenient and equitable access. Its findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, planners, and building managers in developing layouts that improve movement, usability, and user experience. The study can contribute to the design of more accessible, functional, inclusive, and user-responsive buildings that accommodate diverse patterns of use.
