The Effect of Bedroom Orientation on Residential Thermal Comfort
Abstract
Bedroom orientation is an important consideration in residential architectural design because it influences the amount of solar radiation, daylight, and natural airflow received by sleeping spaces. The direction in which bedrooms are positioned can affect indoor temperature and thermal conditions, particularly in warm climates where excessive solar heat gain can create uncomfortable indoor environments. Appropriate orientation can help reduce heat accumulation and improve natural ventilation, thereby contributing to more comfortable and energy-efficient residential buildings. This study examines the effect of bedroom orientation on residential thermal comfort by assessing how different orientations influence indoor environmental conditions. It considers the positioning of bedrooms relative to the sun path, prevailing wind direction, and surrounding buildings. Attention is given to the relationship between bedroom orientation and indoor air temperature, radiant heat, air movement, and occupants' perceptions of thermal comfort during different periods of the day. The study further investigates the influence of solar exposure on bedrooms with different orientations. East- and west-facing bedrooms may experience varying levels of solar radiation during morning and afternoon periods, while north- and south-facing orientations may present different patterns of heat exposure depending on geographical location and seasonal conditions. The effectiveness of shading devices, window placement, glazing characteristics, and external obstructions is also considered in determining the thermal performance of differently oriented bedrooms. Natural ventilation is another important factor in the relationship between orientation and thermal comfort. Bedroom orientation can affect the potential for cross-ventilation when windows and openings are positioned in relation to prevailing winds. The study therefore examines how orientation interacts with window arrangement, opening size, building layout, and surrounding environmental conditions to influence air movement and nighttime cooling, particularly in naturally ventilated residential buildings. The effectiveness of bedroom orientation is influenced by several factors, including local climate, building form, construction materials, roof design, window-to-wall ratio, shading, vegetation, and occupant behaviour. Consequently, orientation alone may not determine thermal comfort but forms part of a broader set of passive design strategies. Integrating appropriate orientation with other climatic design measures can help reduce dependence on mechanical cooling and improve residential environmental performance. The study concludes that bedroom orientation can have a significant influence on residential thermal comfort by affecting solar heat gain, daylight exposure, natural ventilation, and indoor temperature conditions. Careful consideration of orientation during the early stages of architectural design can contribute to more comfortable and energy-efficient bedrooms, particularly in warm climates. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects and residential designers in integrating orientation with other passive cooling strategies to improve occupant comfort and building performance.
