Relationship Between Window Orientation and Privacy in Residential Rooms
Abstract
The study examines the relationship between window orientation and privacy in residential rooms, with emphasis on how the direction and positioning of windows influence the visual privacy of occupants. Window orientation is an important aspect of residential design because the location and direction of openings determine the extent to which interior spaces are exposed to adjacent buildings, roads, walkways, courtyards, and other surrounding activities. Appropriate window orientation can support natural lighting and ventilation while limiting unwanted visual exposure and maintaining residential privacy. The study will assess the relationship between window orientation and privacy in selected residential rooms. Attention will be given to the direction of window openings, their position within rooms, window height, size, distance from neighbouring buildings, relationship to roads and pedestrian routes, external obstructions, curtains or blinds, and surrounding site conditions. Privacy will be assessed based on visibility into residential rooms, visual exposure from surrounding spaces, occupants’ perception of privacy, and the extent to which window arrangements support comfortable use of interior spaces. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of residential buildings and occupants will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through physical observation, window orientation measurements, site assessment, photographic documentation, visual privacy assessments, and structured questionnaires administered to selected residents. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative and correlation techniques will be applied to determine the relationship between window orientation and residential privacy. The study is expected to reveal that window orientation has a measurable relationship with privacy in residential rooms. Windows oriented toward less exposed areas or adequately screened surroundings are expected to provide greater visual privacy, while openings facing busy roads, pedestrian routes, or closely positioned neighbouring buildings may increase visual exposure. The degree of privacy may also vary according to window height, opening size, room function, surrounding development, vegetation, boundary walls, shading devices, and the use of curtains or blinds. The findings will be useful to architects, residential designers, urban planners, developers, and homeowners involved in housing design and development. The study may provide practical information for determining suitable window orientations and integrating privacy considerations with natural lighting, ventilation, and views. It may also support residential designs that provide occupants with greater privacy, comfort, and control over visual exposure without unnecessarily compromising environmental performance. The study will conclude by establishing the relationship between window orientation and privacy in residential rooms and emphasizing the importance of considering surrounding visual conditions when positioning window openings. It is recommended that window orientation, height, size, surrounding buildings, pedestrian movement, vegetation, and screening elements be considered together during residential design. Further studies should examine window orientation and privacy across different residential building types, neighbourhood densities, and site conditions.
