Relationship Between Tree Canopy Coverage and Outdoor Thermal Comfort
Abstract
The study examines the relationship between tree canopy coverage and outdoor thermal comfort, focusing on how the extent and distribution of tree cover influence thermal conditions within outdoor spaces. Tree canopies provide shade and can modify the outdoor environment by reducing direct solar radiation, lowering surface temperatures, and influencing air movement and humidity. Understanding this relationship is important for improving the environmental quality and usability of outdoor spaces within residential, institutional, recreational, and urban environments. The study will assess tree canopy characteristics including canopy coverage, canopy size, tree height, density, distribution, spacing, and the proportion of shaded and exposed areas within selected outdoor spaces. Outdoor thermal comfort will be assessed using environmental indicators such as air temperature, surface temperature, relative humidity, air movement, and users’ perception of thermal conditions. The study will also consider the relationship between tree-covered areas, paved surfaces, open spaces, and surrounding buildings in determining outdoor thermal conditions. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. Selected outdoor spaces will be assessed using appropriate sampling procedures. Data will be collected through field observation, tree and canopy measurements, site mapping, environmental measurements, photographic documentation, and structured questionnaires administered to users of the selected outdoor spaces. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation or inferential tests may be applied to establish the relationship between tree canopy coverage and outdoor thermal comfort. The study is expected to reveal differences in thermal conditions between areas with varying levels of tree canopy coverage. Outdoor spaces with greater and more strategically distributed tree canopy are expected to experience reduced solar exposure, lower surface temperatures, and more favourable thermal conditions compared with areas with limited or no tree cover. The strength of the relationship may also vary according to tree species, canopy density, surrounding building forms, ground surface materials, wind conditions, and spatial arrangement. The findings will be useful to architects, landscape architects, urban planners, environmental designers, facility managers, and other professionals involved in the planning and development of outdoor spaces. The study may provide useful information for incorporating tree canopy into landscape and urban design strategies aimed at improving outdoor thermal conditions. It may also support decisions concerning tree placement, canopy distribution, shaded activity areas, and climate-responsive landscape planning. The study will conclude by establishing the relationship between tree canopy coverage and outdoor thermal comfort within the selected outdoor spaces. It is recommended that adequate and appropriately distributed tree canopy be incorporated into the planning and design of outdoor environments to provide shade and improve thermal conditions. Further studies involving different tree species, canopy structures, outdoor space types, and climatic conditions are recommended to provide broader information on the contribution of urban vegetation to outdoor environmental comfort.
