Relationship Between Computer-Aided Design Skills and Documentation Efficiency
Abstract
The study examines the relationship between computer-aided design skills and documentation efficiency, focusing on how proficiency in computer-aided design tools influences the preparation, modification, organization, and production of architectural documentation. Computer-aided design has become an important component of contemporary architectural practice, providing tools for drafting, editing, detailing, annotation, and drawing production. Effective use of these tools may improve the speed and consistency with which architectural drawings and related documentation are prepared. The study will assess computer-aided design skills based on proficiency in drafting, drawing modification, dimensioning, annotation, layer management, drawing organization, detailing, file management, and the use of standard CAD commands and features. Documentation efficiency will be assessed using indicators such as time required to prepare drawings, speed of revisions, drawing consistency, accuracy of annotations and dimensions, ease of producing multiple drawing views, and ability to manage documentation changes. Attention will also be given to the frequency and manner in which CAD tools are used during architectural documentation tasks. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. Selected architecture students, architectural practitioners, or design professionals will be assessed using appropriate sampling procedures. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires, practical CAD skill assessments, task-based observations, and review of selected architectural documentation outputs. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation or inferential tests may be applied to determine the relationship between computer-aided design skills and documentation efficiency. The study is expected to reveal a relationship between CAD proficiency and the efficiency of architectural documentation. Individuals with stronger computer-aided design skills are expected to complete drafting and documentation tasks more efficiently, produce revisions more quickly, and maintain greater consistency in drawings and annotations. Lower levels of CAD proficiency may be associated with longer documentation time, difficulties in making revisions, and increased occurrence of drafting or organizational errors. The observed relationship may also vary according to task complexity, software familiarity, available digital resources, and experience with architectural documentation procedures. The findings will be useful to architects, architectural educators, students, architectural firms, CAD specialists, and other professionals involved in building design and documentation. The study may provide useful information on the importance of developing practical CAD competencies for improving architectural documentation workflows. It may also assist educational institutions and architectural practices in identifying areas requiring additional CAD training and in developing more efficient approaches to drawing preparation and document management. The study will conclude by establishing the relationship between computer-aided design skills and documentation efficiency. It is recommended that architectural education and professional development programmes provide adequate practical CAD training, with emphasis on drafting accuracy, drawing organization, revision procedures, and efficient use of software features. Further studies involving different CAD platforms, user experience levels, project types, and documentation requirements are recommended to provide broader information on the role of CAD skills in architectural documentation.
