Influence of Tree Canopy Coverage on Outdoor Thermal Comfort
Abstract
The study examines the influence of tree canopy coverage on outdoor thermal comfort, with emphasis on how the extent of tree cover affects the thermal conditions experienced by people in outdoor spaces. Tree canopies can modify outdoor environments by providing shade, reducing direct solar radiation, influencing air temperature, and supporting evaporative cooling. Understanding the relationship between canopy coverage and outdoor thermal comfort is therefore important for the planning and design of environmentally responsive public and recreational spaces. The study will assess the extent and distribution of tree canopy coverage within selected outdoor environments and examine its relationship with users’ thermal comfort. Attention will be given to canopy density, canopy spread, tree arrangement, shaded and unshaded areas, and the relationship between tree coverage and surrounding surfaces. Outdoor thermal conditions will be assessed using parameters such as air temperature, relative humidity, surface temperature, and air movement, alongside users’ perceptions of thermal comfort. A descriptive comparative research design will be adopted for the study. Selected outdoor spaces with varying levels of tree canopy coverage will be assessed through physical observation, vegetation measurements, site mapping, environmental measurements, and structured questionnaires administered to users. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative or correlation tests may be applied to determine the relationship between tree canopy coverage and outdoor thermal comfort. The study is expected to reveal that outdoor spaces with greater and appropriately distributed tree canopy coverage may provide more favourable thermal conditions than areas with limited or no tree cover. Shaded areas are expected to record lower surface temperatures and reduced exposure to direct solar radiation, while users may report improved thermal comfort and greater willingness to remain within shaded spaces. Variations may also occur depending on canopy density, tree arrangement, surrounding surface materials, air movement, and other environmental conditions. The findings will be useful to architects, landscape architects, urban planners, environmental designers, developers, and professionals involved in the planning of outdoor spaces. The study may provide useful information for incorporating appropriate tree canopy coverage into landscape and site planning as a strategy for improving outdoor thermal comfort. The findings may also support the development of climate-responsive public spaces that provide more comfortable and environmentally sustainable conditions for users. The study will conclude by establishing the influence of tree canopy coverage on outdoor thermal comfort. It is recommended that trees should be strategically incorporated into outdoor spaces to provide adequate and well-distributed shade while maintaining appropriate pedestrian circulation, visibility, safety, and accessibility. Further studies involving different tree species, canopy characteristics, seasons, and outdoor settings are recommended to provide broader evidence on the role of urban tree coverage in improving outdoor thermal conditions.
