Influence of Seating Provision on the Use of Public Open Spaces
Abstract
The study examines the influence of seating provision on the use of public open spaces. Seating is an important element of public open-space design because it provides opportunities for rest, social interaction, observation, and temporary activities. The availability, quantity, distribution, comfort, and location of seating facilities may influence how frequently people use public open spaces and how long they remain within them. The study will assess seating provision in selected public open spaces and determine its influence on patterns of use. Attention will be given to the number, type, location, spacing, orientation, comfort, accessibility, and condition of seating facilities. Public-space use will be assessed through observations of user numbers, duration of stay, activity patterns, and the different ways in which people occupy and interact within the spaces. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. Selected public open spaces will be identified using an appropriate sampling technique and assessed through physical observation, seating inventory, activity mapping, and structured questionnaires administered to users where applicable. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative and correlation tests will be applied to determine the relationship between seating provision and public-space use. The study is expected to reveal that differences in seating provision influence the patterns and intensity of public open-space use. Public spaces with adequate, comfortable, accessible, and appropriately distributed seating are expected to attract more users and support longer periods of stay and a wider range of activities. Poorly positioned, insufficient, uncomfortable, or poorly maintained seating may discourage prolonged use and reduce opportunities for social interaction and relaxation. The findings will be useful to architects, landscape architects, urban planners, facility managers, environmental designers, and other professionals involved in the planning and management of public open spaces. The study may provide useful information for improving seating design and placement as part of strategies for creating attractive, functional, and socially supportive public environments. It may also assist in developing open spaces that respond more effectively to the needs and activities of different user groups. The study will conclude by determining the influence of seating provision on the use of public open spaces. It is recommended that seating facilities should be adequately provided, appropriately distributed, comfortable, accessible, and regularly maintained to support effective use of public open spaces. Further studies involving different types of public spaces, user groups, and environmental conditions are recommended to provide broader information on seating provision and public-space utilization.
