Influence of Roadside Development on Pedestrian Environmental Comfort

Abstract

The study examines the influence of roadside development on pedestrian environmental comfort. Roadside development involves the arrangement and characteristics of buildings, commercial activities, setbacks, vegetation, parking areas, walkways, signage, and other physical elements located along road corridors. These features can influence the environmental conditions experienced by pedestrians by affecting shade, heat exposure, air movement, noise levels, visual quality, and the overall comfort of walking environments. The study will assess roadside development characteristics and determine their influence on pedestrian environmental comfort along selected road corridors. Attention will be given to building setbacks, roadside commercial activities, vegetation, pedestrian walkways, parking arrangements, shading elements, roadside enclosure, and the relationship between buildings and pedestrian spaces. Pedestrian environmental comfort will be assessed using indicators such as perceived thermal comfort, shade availability, noise, air movement, visual conditions, and users’ overall satisfaction with the roadside environment. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. Selected road corridors will be identified using an appropriate sampling technique and assessed through physical observation, environmental measurements, roadside development audits, pedestrian counts, and structured questionnaires administered to pedestrians where applicable. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative and correlation tests will be applied to determine the relationship between roadside development characteristics and pedestrian environmental comfort. The study is expected to reveal differences in pedestrian environmental comfort along road corridors with varying patterns of roadside development. Areas with adequate setbacks, vegetation, shading, appropriate pedestrian facilities, and better-organized roadside activities are expected to provide more favorable environmental conditions for pedestrians. Conversely, excessive building enclosure, limited vegetation, unorganized commercial activities, inadequate pedestrian space, and increased traffic-related exposure may contribute to greater heat, noise, congestion, and reduced environmental comfort. The findings will be useful to architects, urban planners, landscape architects, transport planners, environmental designers, municipal authorities, and other professionals involved in the planning and management of road corridors. The study may provide useful information for improving roadside development and creating more comfortable pedestrian environments. It may also contribute to urban design strategies that integrate buildings, vegetation, pedestrian facilities, and roadside activities in ways that support safer and more pleasant walking conditions. The study will conclude by determining the influence of roadside development on pedestrian environmental comfort. It is recommended that roadside development should incorporate appropriate building setbacks, pedestrian facilities, vegetation, shading, organized commercial activities, and other environmental design measures that improve pedestrian comfort. Further studies involving different road types, climatic conditions, and urban environments are recommended to provide broader information on roadside development and pedestrian environmental performance.
