Influence of Post-Occupancy Feedback on Future Architectural Design Decisions
Abstract
The study examines the influence of post-occupancy feedback on future architectural design decisions, with emphasis on how information obtained from building users after occupation can inform the planning and design of subsequent building projects. Post-occupancy feedback provides information about the actual performance, usability, comfort, functionality, and suitability of completed buildings. Such information can help identify differences between intended design outcomes and users’ experiences and provide useful evidence for improving future architectural decisions. The study will assess the nature of feedback obtained from occupants and examine how such information influences decisions relating to spatial arrangement, circulation, accessibility, natural lighting, ventilation, thermal comfort, building functionality, facility provision, and user convenience. Attention will also be given to the methods used to obtain post-occupancy feedback, including questionnaires, interviews, observations, complaint records, satisfaction surveys, and building performance assessments. The study will examine the extent to which information from previous building users is incorporated into subsequent architectural planning and design processes. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of architects, building users, facility managers, and other relevant stakeholders involved in selected building projects will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires, interviews, physical observations, post-occupancy assessment records, and review of relevant architectural documents where available. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential techniques may be applied to determine relevant relationships. The study is expected to reveal that post-occupancy feedback provides useful information for improving future architectural design decisions by identifying practical problems and successful design features observed during actual building use. Feedback relating to spatial functionality, circulation, accessibility, lighting, ventilation, thermal comfort, maintenance, and user satisfaction may contribute to adjustments in subsequent designs. The extent of influence may vary according to the quality of feedback, the methods used to obtain it, the willingness of professionals to apply the information, project requirements, available resources, and organizational practices. The findings will be useful to architects, architectural firms, facility managers, developers, building owners, and architectural educators involved in building design and evaluation. The study may support the integration of systematic post-occupancy feedback into architectural practice as a means of improving design quality and ensuring that lessons from completed projects inform future developments. It may also encourage stronger communication between building users and design professionals and promote evidence-based approaches to architectural decision-making. The study will conclude by establishing the role of post-occupancy feedback in informing future architectural design decisions and improving the responsiveness of subsequent building projects. It is recommended that architectural practices and relevant building stakeholders establish systematic procedures for collecting, documenting, evaluating, and applying post-occupancy feedback during future design processes. Further studies should examine the application of post-occupancy feedback across different building types and project contexts to strengthen evidence-based architectural design practice.
