Influence of Post-Occupancy Evaluation on Building Performance Improvement
Abstract
The study examines the influence of post-occupancy evaluation on building performance improvement, with emphasis on how systematic assessment of buildings after occupation can identify performance deficiencies and provide information for improving building functionality and user experience. Post-occupancy evaluation provides an opportunity to assess how buildings perform in actual use by considering physical conditions, environmental performance, functional efficiency, and occupants’ experiences. Its application can therefore provide useful feedback for improving existing buildings and informing future design and construction decisions. The study will assess selected aspects of building performance through post-occupancy evaluation, including thermal comfort, natural lighting, ventilation, spatial functionality, accessibility, indoor environmental quality, building maintenance, and user satisfaction. Attention will also be given to building defects, operational challenges, patterns of space use, and differences between intended building performance and actual performance during occupation. The study will examine how information obtained through post-occupancy evaluation can be used to identify areas requiring improvement. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. Selected occupied buildings will be assessed through physical observation, building-performance checklists, environmental measurements, review of relevant building information, and structured questionnaires administered to building occupants. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative or correlation tests may be applied to determine relationships between identified building-performance conditions and user satisfaction. The study is expected to reveal that post-occupancy evaluation can identify important deficiencies affecting building performance and user satisfaction. Areas such as inadequate ventilation, poor lighting, uncomfortable thermal conditions, inefficient space arrangement, accessibility limitations, and maintenance problems may be identified through systematic evaluation. The findings are expected to demonstrate that the information generated through post-occupancy assessment can provide a basis for targeted building improvements and can contribute to better decisions in the design and management of future buildings. The findings will be useful to architects, building designers, facility managers, developers, building owners, environmental consultants, and other professionals involved in building design, construction, and management. The study may provide useful information on the value of incorporating post-occupancy evaluation into building management and design processes. It may also support the development of feedback-based approaches for improving building functionality, environmental performance, maintenance practices, and occupant satisfaction. The study will conclude by establishing the influence of post-occupancy evaluation on building performance improvement. It is recommended that post-occupancy evaluation should be incorporated into building management and review processes to identify performance deficiencies and guide appropriate corrective measures. Regular assessment, effective documentation of findings, and the integration of user feedback into future design decisions should also be encouraged, while further studies involving different building types and performance conditions are recommended.
