Influence of Multiple Entrance Provision on Circulation Efficiency
Abstract
The study examines the influence of multiple entrance provision on circulation efficiency in buildings, with emphasis on how the number, distribution, and arrangement of entrances affect the movement of users within and around building spaces. Multiple entrances can provide alternative access points, distribute pedestrian movement, reduce pressure on a single entrance, and improve connections between different parts of a building and its surrounding environment. Their effectiveness, however, may depend on their location, accessibility, connectivity, and relationship with internal circulation routes. The study will assess the relationship between multiple entrance provision and circulation efficiency in selected buildings. Attention will be given to the number and location of entrances, spacing between entrance points, entrance visibility, connections to corridors, stairs, lifts, reception areas, activity spaces, parking areas, and pedestrian walkways. Circulation efficiency will be assessed using indicators such as movement distance, travel time, pedestrian flow, congestion, route selection, waiting time, ease of navigation, and accessibility of major building spaces. The study will also consider building function, user volume, spatial layout, and entrance usage patterns. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of selected buildings and their users will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through physical observation, entrance location measurements, circulation mapping, pedestrian movement counts, photographic documentation, and structured questionnaires administered to building users and relevant personnel. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative and correlation techniques will be applied to examine the relationship between multiple entrance provision and circulation efficiency. The study is expected to reveal that the provision and distribution of multiple entrances influence the efficiency of user circulation. Buildings with appropriately positioned entrances that connect effectively with major circulation routes are expected to distribute pedestrian movement more efficiently, reduce congestion, shorten travel distances, and improve access to different building zones. Poorly positioned or redundant entrances may have limited benefits and may create conflicting movement patterns, unnecessary circulation, or difficulties in wayfinding. The effectiveness of multiple entrances is also expected to vary according to building size, function, occupancy, internal layout, entrance visibility, and pedestrian approach patterns. The findings will be useful to architects, urban planners, interior designers, facility managers, building owners, developers, and other professionals involved in building planning and management. The study may provide practical information for determining suitable numbers and locations of entrances in relation to building function and expected user movement. It may also support the development of building circulation systems that improve accessibility, reduce congestion, and provide more convenient connections between external approaches and internal spaces. The study will conclude by establishing the influence of multiple entrance provision on circulation efficiency and emphasizing the importance of coordinating entrance locations with building layout, pedestrian approaches, and internal circulation systems. It is recommended that multiple entrances be strategically positioned and clearly connected to major activity areas and circulation routes while avoiding unnecessary duplication or conflicting movement patterns. Further studies should examine multiple entrance provision across different building types, occupancy levels, and patterns of user movement.
