Influence of Landscape Buffers on Traffic Noise Reduction
Abstract
The study examines the influence of landscape buffers on traffic noise reduction, with emphasis on how vegetation, planting arrangements, landform, and other landscape elements can reduce the transmission and perception of noise generated by road traffic. Traffic noise is a common environmental concern in areas located close to busy roads, particularly where residential, educational, commercial, and recreational activities occur. Landscape buffers may provide a practical environmental design approach for reducing noise exposure while also improving the visual and ecological quality of developed areas. The study will assess the characteristics of landscape buffers and examine their influence on traffic noise reduction along selected road corridors. Attention will be given to buffer width, vegetation density, tree and shrub arrangement, plant height, ground cover, spacing, and the relationship between the buffer, roadway, and adjacent buildings or activity areas. Noise conditions will be assessed at appropriate points within and beyond landscape buffers, while differences in noise levels between buffered and less-buffered areas will be examined. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of road corridors or developed areas with varying landscape buffer characteristics will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through field observation, landscape measurements, vegetation assessment, noise-level measurements, site mapping, photographic documentation, and structured questionnaires where applicable. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative or correlation techniques may be applied to determine the relationship between landscape buffer characteristics and traffic noise levels. The study is expected to reveal that landscape buffers with adequate width, vegetation density, height, and appropriate planting arrangements may contribute to a reduction in traffic noise reaching adjacent areas. Dense and strategically arranged vegetation may provide greater visual and environmental separation between roads and nearby buildings or activity spaces, although the effectiveness of a landscape buffer may vary according to traffic volume, road characteristics, buffer dimensions, vegetation type, terrain, wind conditions, and the distance between the noise source and receiving area. The findings will be useful to landscape architects, architects, urban planners, environmental planners, developers, transportation planners, and planning authorities involved in road and neighbourhood development. The study may provide useful information for incorporating landscape buffers into road corridor planning and site development as part of broader environmental noise management strategies. It may also support the design of greener and more comfortable urban environments by combining noise-reduction objectives with vegetation, shading, visual screening, and ecological functions. The study will conclude by establishing the influence of landscape buffers on traffic noise reduction and highlighting their potential contribution to improved environmental quality along developed road corridors. It is recommended that appropriate vegetation types, buffer widths, planting densities, and landscape arrangements be considered when planning developments located near busy roads. Further studies should examine the combined effects of vegetation, landform, buffer width, and other physical barriers on traffic noise reduction under different urban conditions.
