Influence of Drawing Coordination on Reduction of Construction Errors
Abstract
The study examines the influence of drawing coordination on the reduction of construction errors, with emphasis on how the coordination of architectural drawings with structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and other relevant project documents can affect accuracy during building construction. Poorly coordinated drawings may contain conflicting dimensions, inconsistent information, omissions, duplicated details, or discrepancies between different drawing sets, which can result in misinterpretation, rework, material wastage, delays, and additional construction costs. Effective drawing coordination is therefore important for improving the clarity and reliability of construction documentation. The study will assess the relationship between drawing coordination and the occurrence of construction errors in selected building projects. Attention will be given to the consistency of plans, elevations, sections, details, dimensions, specifications, schedules, service layouts, revision information, and coordination between architectural and other technical drawings. Construction errors will be assessed based on dimensional discrepancies, conflicting information, incorrect positioning of building elements, service clashes, omitted details, material-related errors, rework, and deviations from approved drawings. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of selected building projects and relevant construction professionals will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through drawing reviews, site inspections, construction-error checklists, photographic documentation, project records, and structured questionnaires or interviews with architects, contractors, site supervisors, and other relevant professionals. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative and correlation techniques will be applied to examine the relationship between drawing coordination and construction errors. The study is expected to reveal that better-coordinated drawings are associated with fewer construction errors and improved accuracy during project execution. Consistency between architectural and technical drawings is expected to reduce dimensional conflicts, service clashes, misinterpretation, incorrect installations, and unnecessary rework. Poor coordination may increase the likelihood of errors, delays, material wastage, and construction modifications. The effect may also vary according to project complexity, quality of documentation, revision control, communication among professionals, site supervision, and the experience of construction personnel. The findings will be useful to architects, structural engineers, building services professionals, contractors, quantity surveyors, project managers, site supervisors, and other construction professionals. The study may provide practical information on the importance of systematic drawing review, interdisciplinary coordination, accurate documentation, revision control, and effective information exchange before and during construction. It may also support improved construction management practices aimed at reducing avoidable errors and improving project efficiency. The study will conclude by establishing the influence of drawing coordination on the reduction of construction errors and emphasizing the importance of coordinated construction documentation in building project delivery. It is recommended that drawing sets be systematically reviewed and coordinated before construction and that subsequent revisions be properly documented and communicated to all relevant project participants. Further studies should examine drawing coordination practices across different building types, project scales, and construction methods.
