Effect of Spatial Configuration on Privacy in Shared Residential Buildings
Abstract
The study examines the effect of spatial configuration on privacy in shared residential buildings, with emphasis on how the arrangement and relationship of rooms, circulation spaces, entrances, shared facilities, and private areas influence the privacy of residents. Spatial configuration is an important consideration in shared residential buildings because multiple occupants may use common spaces while maintaining different levels of personal and household privacy. Poorly organized spatial relationships may increase unwanted visual, acoustic, and physical exposure, while appropriate configuration can provide better separation between private, semi-private, and shared areas. The study will assess the relationship between spatial configuration and privacy in selected shared residential buildings. Attention will be given to room arrangement, entrances, corridors, stairways, shared living areas, kitchens, bathrooms, balconies, openings, transitional spaces, and the relationship between private and communal areas. Privacy will be assessed based on visual exposure, movement through private areas, accessibility of personal spaces, noise intrusion, separation between residents, control over interaction, and occupants’ perception of privacy. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of selected shared residential buildings and their occupants will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through physical observation, spatial mapping, dimensional measurements, photographic documentation, privacy assessments, and structured questionnaires administered to selected residents. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative and correlation techniques will be applied to examine the relationship between spatial configuration and residential privacy. The study is expected to reveal that spatial configuration has a measurable effect on privacy in shared residential buildings. Configurations that provide clear separation between private and shared areas, controlled access, appropriate transitional spaces, and limited direct views into private rooms are expected to provide better privacy. Poorly arranged spaces may result in unwanted visual exposure, excessive movement through private areas, noise intrusion, and reduced control over social interaction. The level of privacy may also vary according to household size, building layout, room arrangement, occupancy patterns, openings, circulation routes, and the nature of shared facilities. The findings will be useful to architects, residential designers, developers, housing professionals, facility managers, and building owners involved in the planning and management of shared residential accommodation. The study may provide practical information for organizing residential spaces in ways that balance communal interaction with individual privacy. It may also support the development of residential layouts that improve occupant comfort, personal control, security, and satisfaction. The study will conclude by establishing the effect of spatial configuration on privacy in shared residential buildings and emphasizing the importance of deliberate separation and sequencing of private, semi-private, and communal spaces. It is recommended that residential layouts provide appropriate transitional zones, controlled circulation, adequate visual screening, and suitable separation between private and shared areas. Further studies should examine privacy considerations across different types of shared residential buildings, household arrangements, and levels of occupancy.
