Effect of Material Cutting Practices on Construction Waste Generation

Abstract

The study examines the effect of material cutting practices on construction waste generation, with emphasis on how the methods used to measure, mark, cut, and prepare construction materials influence the quantity of waste produced during building projects. Material cutting is a common construction activity involving materials such as timber, reinforcement bars, pipes, tiles, sheets, boards, and other components that require adjustment to specified dimensions. Poor cutting practices may result in excessive off-cuts, inaccurate pieces, material damage, and repeated cutting, thereby increasing construction waste and resource losses. The study will assess the relationship between material cutting practices and construction waste generation in selected building projects. Attention will be given to material measurement, marking and setting-out, cutting methods, cutting equipment, cutting accuracy, cutting sequences, material dimensions, reuse of off-cuts, and workers’ handling practices. Construction waste generation will be assessed based on the quantity and type of off-cuts, damaged materials, unusable remnants, repeated cuts, material losses, and the proportion of materials discarded during construction activities. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of selected building projects, construction workers, site supervisors, and contractors will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through direct observation, measurement of material off-cuts, material-use assessments, photographic documentation, waste records where available, and structured questionnaires or interviews with relevant construction personnel. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative and correlation techniques will be applied to examine the relationship between cutting practices and construction waste generation. The study is expected to reveal that material cutting practices have a measurable effect on the quantity of construction waste generated. Accurate measurement, proper marking, appropriate cutting sequences, suitable equipment, and careful handling are expected to reduce unnecessary off-cuts and material losses. Poor measurement, inaccurate marking, unsuitable cutting methods, inadequate worker skills, and repeated cutting are expected to increase waste generation and material consumption. The level of waste may also vary according to material type, project complexity, design dimensions, worker experience, available equipment, and opportunities for reusing off-cuts. The findings will be useful to architects, quantity surveyors, contractors, builders, site supervisors, construction managers, and other professionals involved in building construction. The study may provide practical information for improving material measurement, cutting procedures, worker practices, and material planning. It may also support construction waste reduction, efficient resource utilization, cost control, and more sustainable construction practices by encouraging the effective reuse of suitable material remnants. The study will conclude by establishing the effect of material cutting practices on construction waste generation and emphasizing the importance of accurate and carefully planned cutting procedures during building construction. It is recommended that construction teams adopt proper measurement and marking procedures, appropriate cutting equipment, efficient cutting sequences, worker training, and systematic off-cut recovery and reuse practices. Further studies should examine specific cutting practices across different construction materials and building project types.

I actually googled and saw about iproject master, copied the number and contacted them through WhatsApp to ask for the availability of the material and to my luck they have it. So there was a delay with the project due to the covid19 pandemic. I was really scared before making the payment cause I’ve been scammed twice, they attended so well to me and that made me trust the process and made the payment and provided them with proof, I got my material in less than 10minutes
