Effect of Accessibility Features on Building Usability for Persons with Disabilities
Abstract
The study examines the effect of accessibility features on building usability for persons with disabilities. Accessibility features are important components of inclusive building design because they enable individuals with different physical and mobility needs to enter, move through, and use buildings with greater independence and safety. Features such as ramps, accessible entrances, door widths, circulation spaces, handrails, lifts, accessible toilets, tactile indicators, and appropriate signage can influence how effectively a building accommodates users with disabilities. The study will assess selected accessibility features and determine their effect on building usability for persons with disabilities. Attention will be given to the availability, condition, location, and suitability of accessibility features within selected buildings. Building usability will be evaluated based on ease of entry, internal movement, access to facilities, ease of performing activities, safety, independence, comfort, and overall user satisfaction. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. Selected buildings with varying levels of accessibility provision will be identified using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through physical observation, accessibility checklists, dimensional assessment, and structured questionnaires administered to relevant building users where applicable. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative and correlation tests will be applied to determine the relationship between accessibility features and building usability. The study is expected to reveal differences in building usability based on the availability and suitability of accessibility features. Buildings with adequate ramps, accessible entrances, appropriate circulation spaces, suitable toilet facilities, effective signage, and other supportive features are expected to provide greater ease, safety, and independence for persons with disabilities. Conversely, inadequate or poorly maintained accessibility features may create barriers to movement, reduce user convenience, and limit effective use of building facilities. The findings will be useful to architects, building designers, facility managers, accessibility consultants, urban planners, building regulators, and other professionals involved in the planning and management of buildings. The study may provide useful information for improving existing accessibility provisions and incorporating inclusive design principles into new building projects. It may also contribute to the development of building environments that promote independence, dignity, safety, and equal participation for persons with disabilities. The study will conclude by determining the effect of accessibility features on building usability for persons with disabilities. It is recommended that accessibility features should be incorporated into building design, properly positioned, adequately maintained, and regularly evaluated to ensure effective usability. Further studies involving different building types, disability groups, and wider user populations are recommended to provide broader information on accessibility and inclusive building performance.
