Assessment of Workplace Satisfaction and Office Design

Abstract

Workplace satisfaction is an important factor in understanding how employees perceive and interact with their working environment. Office design can influence employees’ comfort, motivation, concentration, communication, and overall experience within the workplace. As organizations increasingly recognize the relationship between physical work environments and employee wellbeing, attention to office design has expanded beyond functional requirements to include spatial quality, environmental comfort, aesthetics, and user needs. Assessing workplace satisfaction in relation to office design is therefore important for creating productive and supportive working environments. This study assesses workplace satisfaction and its relationship with office design, focusing on employees’ perceptions of the physical and functional characteristics of their work environments. It considers factors such as workspace size, furniture arrangement, privacy, accessibility, circulation, meeting spaces, and the availability of shared facilities. The study also examines how employees perceive the adequacy and functionality of their office spaces and how these perceptions contribute to their overall satisfaction with the workplace. Environmental conditions within office spaces are also considered as important components of workplace satisfaction. Natural lighting, artificial lighting, ventilation, indoor temperature, acoustic conditions, air quality, and visual connection to the outdoors can influence how employees experience their work environment. Appropriate integration of these elements can enhance comfort and reduce environmental distractions, while inadequate conditions may contribute to discomfort, fatigue, dissatisfaction, and reduced engagement with the workplace. The study further examines the relationship between office aesthetics and employee perceptions. Colour schemes, materials, furniture quality, interior finishes, greenery, artwork, spatial organization, and overall visual character can contribute to employees’ perception of the workplace. A well-designed office can communicate organizational values while creating an environment that employees find comfortable and welcoming. However, aesthetic considerations must be balanced with functional requirements to ensure that visual appeal does not compromise usability or employee needs. Workplace satisfaction may also vary according to employee roles, organizational activities, work patterns, and individual preferences. Employees involved in collaborative tasks may value interaction and shared spaces, while those performing tasks requiring concentration may place greater importance on privacy and acoustic control. Flexibility and opportunities for personal adjustment can therefore be important in accommodating diverse workplace requirements. Understanding these differences can help designers develop office environments that respond more effectively to the needs of different categories of users. The study aims to assess workplace satisfaction and identify the office design characteristics that contribute to positive employee experiences. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, interior designers, facility managers, employers, and organizations in evaluating and improving existing office environments. By incorporating employee feedback into workplace planning and design, the study seeks to promote offices that support comfort, satisfaction, productivity, wellbeing, and effective organizational performance.
