Assessment of Window Configuration in Naturally Ventilated Buildings
Abstract
Window configuration is a critical architectural consideration in naturally ventilated buildings because the size, position, orientation, and type of openings influence the movement and distribution of air within interior spaces. Windows provide pathways for fresh-air entry and the removal of warm or stale air, thereby contributing to thermal comfort and indoor environmental quality. In warm climates, effective window design can reduce reliance on mechanical cooling systems. However, poorly configured windows may restrict airflow, create uneven ventilation, and limit the effectiveness of natural ventilation strategies. This study assesses window configuration in naturally ventilated buildings, focusing on how different window arrangements influence indoor air movement and ventilation effectiveness. It examines window size, shape, position, orientation, opening type, sill height, and the relationship between inlet and outlet openings. Attention is given to how these characteristics affect airflow within different rooms and how window configuration interacts with building orientation and prevailing wind directions. The study further investigates the relationship between window configuration and cross ventilation. Opposing or strategically positioned openings can facilitate continuous airflow through occupied spaces, while poorly aligned openings may create stagnant zones or limited air exchange. The influence of room depth, internal partitions, door positions, corridor arrangements, and spatial connectivity is therefore considered. The study also examines how different window-opening mechanisms, including casement, sliding, louvre, and awning systems, can affect the amount and direction of incoming airflow. Environmental and contextual factors are considered in evaluating window performance. Surrounding buildings, vegetation, boundary walls, shading devices, building height, and site orientation can alter wind direction and velocity before air reaches window openings. Solar exposure is also considered because large or poorly shaded windows may increase heat gain while ventilation openings remain open. The study therefore examines window configuration as part of an integrated approach involving building form, facade design, shading, orientation, and site planning. Challenges may arise when ventilation requirements conflict with other building performance objectives. Increasing window areas can improve potential airflow but may also increase solar heat gain, glare, noise transmission, security concerns, and rain penetration. Window operation may also depend on occupant behaviour and seasonal weather conditions. These factors highlight the importance of balancing opening size, location, orientation, shading, operability, and security when designing naturally ventilated buildings. The study aims to provide a clearer understanding of how window configuration contributes to effective natural ventilation and indoor environmental quality. It is expected to identify window design strategies that support adequate air movement, thermal comfort, and fresh-air exchange while minimizing associated environmental and functional problems. The findings can assist architects and building designers in developing naturally ventilated buildings that respond effectively to climatic conditions and occupant needs.
