Assessment of Traditional Materials in Contemporary Nigerian Architecture
Abstract
Traditional building materials have historically played an important role in shaping the architectural identity, environmental responsiveness, and cultural character of Nigerian communities. Materials such as earth, laterite, adobe, timber, stone, thatch, clay, and locally produced finishes have been used in response to local climate, available resources, construction knowledge, and cultural practices. However, the increasing use of industrially produced materials in contemporary architecture has contributed to a decline in the application of many traditional materials. Assessing their relevance within contemporary Nigerian architecture is therefore important for understanding opportunities to combine cultural heritage with modern building requirements. This study assesses the use of traditional materials in contemporary Nigerian architecture, focusing on their applications, characteristics, performance, and suitability for present-day building projects. The assessment considers materials such as laterite, earth blocks, adobe, timber, clay products, stone, bamboo, thatch, and other locally sourced materials. Attention is given to their application in walls, floors, roofs, screens, façades, finishes, landscape elements, and decorative features, as well as their integration with contemporary construction systems. The study further examines the environmental and technical properties of traditional materials and their potential contribution to sustainable building design. Factors such as thermal performance, embodied energy, local availability, recyclability, durability, moisture resistance, maintenance requirements, and resource consumption are considered. Traditional materials may provide opportunities for reducing transportation distances and supporting climate-responsive construction when appropriately selected and detailed. Their performance, however, depends on construction quality, environmental exposure, material treatment, and compatibility with other building components. In addition, the assessment considers the cultural and architectural significance of traditional materials within contemporary Nigerian design. Their use can contribute to local identity, continuity of cultural expression, regional character, and the reinterpretation of indigenous architectural principles. The study examines how architects can incorporate traditional materials through contemporary forms, technologies, detailing, and spatial arrangements without reducing them to purely decorative elements. The relationship between material selection and the preservation of local architectural knowledge is also considered. Despite their potential benefits, the use of traditional materials faces challenges including perceptions of limited durability, inconsistent material quality, inadequate standardization, lack of skilled craftspeople, maintenance concerns, building regulations, and competition from industrial materials. Limited research, weak supply chains, and changing user preferences may also restrict their wider adoption. Addressing these challenges requires improved material testing, technical guidance, skills development, appropriate standards, and greater integration of traditional knowledge with contemporary construction technologies. The study aims to evaluate the relevance and potential application of traditional materials within contemporary Nigerian architecture. Its findings are expected to assist architects, builders, researchers, policymakers, and other stakeholders in making informed decisions regarding the selection and integration of locally appropriate materials. The study ultimately contributes to the development of culturally responsive, environmentally sustainable, and contextually appropriate Nigerian architecture while supporting the continued relevance of traditional material knowledge.
